Playa Del Racing Goes To The Movies: Team Forms Partnership With National Lampoon For The 2006 Indy 500

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.: Jon Herb, co-owner of Playa Del Racing, today announced a marketing partnership with National Lampoon, Inc. (AMEX: NLN) and it's most recent release, National Lampoon Presents Jake's Booty Call, for the #21 Videopoker.com Panoz/Honda/Firestone entry driven by Jaques Lazier, and the #12 Panoz/Honda/Firestone entry to be driven by Roger Yasukawa, to run the Indianapolis 500 on May 28, 2006. Lazier and Yasukawa will start 24th and 28th, respectively, in that event. National Lampoon will also support the effort of Herb on his #6 Aercon Dallara/Firestone entry in the IRL Indy Pro Series for the full 2006 season.

The 90th running of the Indy Racing League IndyCar Series' Indy 500, the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing," will make the second consecutive year Lazier will drive under the Playa Del Racing banner. He finished 16th in the 2005 race due to another car running into him while racing solidly in the top 10 most of the day.

National Lampoon is the biggest brand in comedy. It is a fully-integrated media and entertainment company operating in four different areas: Licencing and Merchandising; National Lampoon Press (book publishing group); Entertainment (motion pictures, DVDs and television); and its Media Group, which includes National Lampoon College (the largest college TV network in America), NationalLampoon.com, TogaTV.com, The National Lampoon Humor Network, National Lampoon Radio, and other elements. "National Lampoon presents Jake's Booty Call" has erupted into a nationwide sensation among young adults, and is based on the first true Internet celebrity, Jake the Pimp. It is the first full-length flash-animated movie, and has been playing to sell-out audiences around the country for the last three months.

Barry Layne, Executive Vice President of National Lampoon, is confident his association with the Playa Del Racing Team for the 90th Indianapolis 500 will result in big benefits for his company: "We couldn't be more excited for 'National Lampoon presents Jake's Booty Call' to be in business with Playa Del Racing. We are so proud of this team and their accomplishments in getting both cars we are affiliated with into the biggest race on the planet, the Indianapolis 500. National Lampoon recognizes the potency of attaching our brands to m arketable entities, and we chose the Playa Del Racing team for that reason. Extending our support to Jon Herb's Indy Pro Series team was a natural fit for our company since we already knew and trusted the professionals running both sides of that team. We couldn't be happier for our association with Playa Del Racing and look forward to a competitive and safe Race Day for everyone involved on Sunday."

Herb knows something about the entertainment industry. He has appeared in more than a dozen motion pictures and two television shows, including "The Fugitive," "With Honors" and "The Untouchables" television show.

"We are proud to be associated with National Lampoon," Herb said. "They have such a long history in the entertainment industry. It's always fun as a team to have sponsors that the fans enjoy and that bring excitement to our team and series. "National Lampoon presents Jake's Booty Call" has been on my Indy Pro Series car all year, and I've had so many people come up to me and say how excited they are to see a movie of that caliber represented in motorsports. I just tell them to go see the movie because then they'll really have something to be excited about."

Lazier, 34, from Alta Loma, Calif., will drive the team's No. 21 Panoz/Honda/Firestone entry. Lazier will drive in the Indianapolis 500 for the sixth time, qualifying 24th quickest. Lazier was running solidly in the top 10 in the 2005 Indy 500 for the Playa Del Racing team in their debut when another driver ran into him, causing him to fall back to 16th-place at the finish. His best finish at the Indianapolis 500 is 13th as a rookie in 2000. Lazier drove in relief for Robby Gordon in the 2004 Indianapolis 500 after Gordon had to leave the race during a rain delay due to NASCAR commitments at Charlotte, N.C. Lazier, younger brother of 1996 Indianapolis 500 winner Buddy Lazier, won the IndyCar Series race from the MBNA Pole in 2001 at Chicagoland Speedway. He also has extensive experience in Indy Lights, the American IndyCar Series and SCCA competition.

California-bred Yasukawa, 29, who now resides in West Hollywood, joins the Playa Del Racing IndyCar Team for the 2006 Indy 500 and will pilot the #12 Panoz/Honda/Firestone entry in next Sunday's race after qualifying 28th on the grid. This will be Yasukawa's fourth time at the Indy 500, placing in the top 10 two out of the last three races. Yasukawa started racing in karts, eventually becoming champion of several different series, including karting and various formula cars, all over the world.

A Chicago, Ill., native, Herb started racing in 1997 in the US F2000 series, setting his sites on competing in the Indianapolis 500. His dream was realized in 2001 when he qualified for the first time for the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing." Herb fielded his own team competing in both the IRL IndyCar and Indy Pro Series until joining forces with Playa Del Racing prior to the start of the 2006 season. When he isn't racing, Herb serves as Vice President of Aercon Industries, a business based in Florida that produces, sells and installs autoclaved aerated concrete building material.

Playa Del Racing, which loosely translates to "Beach Racing" in Spanish, was founded in 2001 in the beach community of Playa Del Rey, Calif. Herb, Gary Sallee, Susan Schafer, Jeff Brougher and Ernie Moody are the co-owners of the team.

The 90th running of the Indianapolis 500 from Indianapolis Motor Speedway is scheduled to start at 1:00 PM EDT. Live television coverage will be available on ABC with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network providing radio coverage to be simulcast on indycar.com and XM Satellite Radio channel 145.

I hope he wins

TG/IRL will be paired with a pimp in the press for weeks :D

I guess the IRL doesn't have the leverage of NASCAR around banning/approving certain types of sponsors

National Lampoon's Mindy 500 :D

The Griswolds take on the Greatest Spectacle in Racing (R). I'm looking forward to the seen when they strap Mari in her rocking chair to the cowling of the National Lampoon car. Oh, and the scene where Tony's dog wanders into the pits and chews through the airgun hose and gets launched to the roof of the Bombardier Pagota.

True story. A close friend (who still works for Coke out of St. Charles, Illinois) clearly remembers when "Daddy's little boy" was sent to the plant to learn the business. Didn't (wouldn't) do crap, aroused the ire of almost everyone actually earning a living, mostly played with his cars and motorcycles in the parking lot and didn't really stick around very long. Didn't need to, I suppose.

They sold the Coke plant years ago to Jon Herb's dad.

Marvin Herb sold all his bottling concern to Coke corporate. He is just a regular billionaire now buying up large sections of Chicago as he sees fit.
