View Full Version : CBS Pits Monaco Against Indy

It appears CBS is tape delaying Monaco so it's on at the same time as Indy. Has this been done before? It doesn't seem like a good idea (business-wise) in the states, but I'll be interested to see the ratings.

Will the USGP still be on ABC?

Really?!?!? Geez. Monaco is on network TV in America but the USGP is not? WTF?

US network tv coverage of F1 is an abortion. The four races shown on CBS are, for the most part, ruined for us. The vast majority of the country couldn't care less about f1 anyway so puttting it on SPEED isn't losing much of any audience and it allows those of us who do follow F1 to actually enjoy the races. Plus SPEED shows the practice and qualifying sessions that network tv would never carry.

I agree that I'd personally like to see Monaco on SPEED because I do get SPEED. In fact, I was a little PO'd to discover that it is going to be tape-delayed on CBS. But that's another issue.

But if, business-wise, you decide that the USGP (with an American driver now) won't be on a network - but you're willing to stack Monaco against Indy...well...What kind of crazy ideas are those?

I think some teenager owns the right to screen f1 races on CBS. CBS doesn't care because they're getting paid to show the f1 race. CBS looks good by showing the Monaco GP at the same time as Indy because they have quality programming to run simulataneously as Indy.

uh, you most not have seen a CBS F1 broadcast.

"quality" is no the word that come to mind

CBS whould get the speed guys to call the race, then they might actually get more people to watch

IIRC, Monaco has been on CBS opposite Mindy the past 2-3 years.

No Derek Daly today! Danny Sullivan instead. Much better coverage.

I like Danny, but don't really think he did a better job. Still think the announcing was pretty poor.

What kind of crazy ideas are those? Running Monaco opposite Indy is stroke of genius compared to most of their decisions. Remember, you're talking about companies run by people that every season demonstrate how to snatch defeat from the hands of victory. How many times have we seen a new show start out as a hit and after being pre-empted a couple times, having it's time slot changed, then running a few repeats it turns into a bust. :gomer:

Igor's pet peeve #73:

"Quality" is like "temperature". When somebody says "We make a quality product" they say it that way because it says absolutely nothing. Like temperature, quality can be either high or low.

Can't find any sites with info on the weekend ratings. Best bet is to check back here for rating info later this week:

the danicle factor was still worth 1 mil more households than the '04 ratings. shocking that they beat out the 600, think the final ratings will flip them around?

Ripped off from elsewhere:

ABC earned a 5.2/13 overnight Nielsen rating for its coverage of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, down 21.2% from a 6.6/17 last year (overnight). Prerace coverage earned a 2.8/8, down 30.0% from a 4.0/11 in ’05.

I have to admit, it was three times a more exciting race than the 600 NASCAR race was. Even the winner Kasey Kahne could talk about was Indy.
From memory his quote, right out of the car mind you, was "I watched the Indy 500 earlier today and it's really got me pumped up for the 600. My hats off to Sam Hornish jr and Marco Andretti for a great finish". Then the announcer asked what winning the 600 meant to him and he answered something to the affect of "It's a feeling. It was a long race but I grew up watching the Indy 500 and it means allot to me and I really would like to give that a shot some day". I was surprised.
A quick google to try to find the actual quotes brought up ziltch.

The world figured out Danicle is really a 12 year old phillipino boy. thus, the decline in viewership.

Now leave danicals alone, according to her post race analysis her team gave her a 20th place car, but with her talent and driving skill she put it 10th on the starting grid and brought it home 8th in the race.

BTW does 8th place mean she was twice as good this year as last year?
