I love it. It's new and aggressive, yet its heritage is obvious. It shows that retro design doesn't mean regurgitating the past. The Mustang proved this to some degree too, but it's much more retro than Chevy's effort. Meanwhile, Dodge's new Challenger concept is a virtual clone of the early-'70s models. I'll take the Camaro.

the Dodge was designed that way on purpose. And even though I left my muscle car passions back in the 80's, I'm seriously thinking about getting a Hemi Challenger. I owned two originals, a 70 and a 72 both with small blocks and I always dreamed of owning a Hemi that wasn't in a pickup truck.

The Camaro will probably resemble the first gen models more when it is actually built instead of prototype guise. I'm sure the bowtie guys will eat it up.

The new Camaro and Challenger are an attempt to steal a little market share from the ever popular Mustang. Two years ago I read that for there was one camaro sold for every four Mustangs. No wonder they pulled the plug on it.

Now, since they decided to bring back the legendary marques, they are going with the same retro design of the Mustang instead of making all new machines and having a backlash from the old die hards who cry blasphemy. At least with the "let's copy ourselves" model they will get a tip o' the hat from fans of the original and the new fans will like that it's retro. Stack up the '04 Mustang and '04 Camaro...V8, check, rear wheel drive, check, pony car size check, dual exhaust, check, manual transmission, check, retro styling...Mustang. Hmm, so the Mustang outsells it four to one. Something to be said for nostalgia.

It's funny that they are doing this because back in the 80's I had the idea that the big three bring back many of their classic cars but downsize them, give them small displacement v8's and V6's (like the 4.6, 3.5) and downsize them dramatically. Imagine a '69 Charger about the size of a modern mustang. Or a '70 Chevelle, or '66 GTO, or '70 'cuda or '69 Road Runner or a '70 Mach 1 all small, nimble and brand new. The couldn't make enough of them.

Actually I'm surprised some aftermarket hasn't done that already. Did you know you can buy everything you need from the aftermarket to make your very own "69 Camaro"? I'm not talking about bits and pieces here and there I'm talking frame, crate engine, interior and body panels all from the same manufacturer. All you do is bolt it together. There is also a Canadian company (IIRC) called Extreme Velocity that takes old Mopars and rebuilds them with modern technology and 500hp engines. They supposedly handle like a modern Mustang and go like heck. But I still think it would be cool if they downsized them. My '69 Charger was like 15 feet long. That thing was huge.

The purists hate to hear it, but the reason the Mustang survived was that it was a practical daily driver and the V6 model was affordable for those who wanted the style without the fire breathing performance. The old Fox platform was also cheap to manufacture.

Of course the purists also tend to lose sight of the fact that the whole pony car segment sprang from daily drivers rebodied into sporty cars.

Right, the original Mustang was built on the Falcon frame and even on through the 80's it was built on the slightly evolved Fox platform.

The old Fox platform was also cheap to manufacture. Exactly right, and the car was incredibly profitable for the company because it was not only inexpensive to produce but the design appealed to people across a very broad demographic so that it sold in serious volume as well. IMO Ford's latest version has done a very effective job of renewing that franchise.

Hard to imagine the new Camaro design is going to have that same kind of broad appeal. It's the same overstated garish styling that has driven people away from GM products in hordes and I don't really see it getting an administrative assistant out of her Civic in the same way the new Mustang very well might.

^ Coincidentally, this was posted exactly two years ago. Here's the current story:

With oil prices now at a record $4/gallon buyers in the US are frantically ditching their powerful trucks and SUV's in favour of smaller cars with smaller engines.

Between January and April, sales of basic compact cars such as the Toyota Yaris and Nissan Versa rose 36.7 percent over a year earlier, according to JD Power.

Sales of the Chevrolet Aveo rose 23 percent in April despite slower sales in the previous three months but sales of large SUV's such as the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition plunged 26.9 percent.

http://www.motoring.co.za/index.php?fArticleId=4434786&fSectionId=928&fSetId=381

So where are the Dodge Sipper SXT and the Ford Miser Eddie Bauer Edition? I'll let GM off the hook a bit since they actually have something to sell, even if they don't build it. Oh yeah, this has only been coming for 5 years. We can't expect miracles. :tony:

GM to close 4 truck plants

Automaker plans to shut pickup and SUV plants by 2010, plans to build more fuel-efficient vehicles, and may dump the Hummer brand.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- General Motors announced plans Tuesday to shut four pickup and SUV plants, saying high fuel prices have produced a rapid and permanent change in consumer preferences away from the truck models on which it has depended.

At a news conference in Wilmington, Del., GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner also unveiled plans to produce more fuel efficient vehicles

The plants to be closed include two U.S. facilities - Moraine, Ohio and Janesville, Wis., along with plants in Canada and Mexico. The plants will close in 2009 and 2010. Each plant has about 2,500 employees.

Wagoner also said GM is looking at possibly selling its Hummer brand, the large SUV based on military vehicles.

He also announced that GM has approved production of the Chevrolet Volt, a so-called plug-in hybrid vehicle that can run about 40 miles without any use of gasoline. That is due in showrooms by the end of 2010. .

The plans were announced ahead of GM's (GM, Fortune 500) annual meeting Tuesday. It follows similar plans unveiled last month by rival Ford Motor (F, Fortune 500), although Ford did not give details of plant closing plans.
