Yeesh, there is no way I could do that. It is like the wall climbers in Zion NP, their brains must be wired differently to do things like that.
I don't check this thread too often but I'm so glad I saw the tower climbers. Very cool. My father headed the company that built the original tracking towers at Cape Canaveral. Therefore, it never struck me as particularly odd that people climbed up hundreds (now thousands) of feet in the air with virtually no support. :D This took it to (cough) a whole new level. I was okay with all of it except those spikey bits. Yikes!

That guy has to be the most annoying F I've ever had the displeasure of listening to. I agree with him though. :)
The idea that it's a cell phone is ridiculous. Nothing metal goes through.
Look at how deep the shadows are in the scene. It's either bright day light or the area has been brightly lit. As I recall, one or the other would have been required for good exposure of a moving scene at the time.
So my theory is that the lady is just shielding her eyes from the light.

IIRC it's not a scene from the movie at all, but newsreel footage of the premiere of the movie at Grauman's/Mann's/whatever it was called in 1928.
I'm constantly amazed at the number of squabbles on this planet that would never see the light of day if folks understood how to apply the burden of proof...

BTW the cast of Jersey Shore are bennies. They are not from Jersey at all. They, like other bennies, just show up every summer to pollute our beaches. Sort of like the medical waste that washes up.

In the olden days you could count on getting a big dollop of genuine roadside gore and mayhem in the form of highway safety films in Driver's Ed. I don't imagine that they're still subjecting today's delicate flowers to the merger of a young lady's face and the metal dashboard of a '60s Plymouth, but I'm sure that some of them are seeking it out on the web for kicks.

Driver Ed is farmed out now to private companies. The classroom portion is studying the state drivers manual and taking mock tests. There are no movies. Then there is some mickey mouse behind the wheel time. My daughters took it a couple years ago. Cost $700 per and was essentially worthless. I had to "unteach" most of the behind the wheel stuff. An example is they demanded the students use hand over hand steering instead of shuffling the wheel. :shakehead I wanted to kick the old bitch who "taught" them to drive in the face. There was zero, nada, zilch emphasis on threshold braking, emergency swerving, driving on loose surfaces, recovering from a slide, etc............. We did that on our own :)

The "pinky" -- "Speeding, no one will think big of you" clips at the end I think are very effective.
The others do indeed snap people out of their sense of norm, and that's the point and that's OK to a point, but several seemed to convey as stronger message of "Really bad things happen to really good, ordinary people".
Just doing what we all do -- looking fondly at a girl we have a crush on -- will get you horribly killed.
Yes, live with some caution, live a bit more purposely, but not with dread that somehow no matter what you will be maimed or killed or maim or kill someone else.
As the father of a 17 year old new driver I do watch these with a lot of emotion and wonder as to what will keep him from making a horrible mistake.
Well, that brightened my day.

About the same in Jersey. State does show some gory movies though they are getting pretty old. One is done by teenage vehicular manslaughter inmates in Ohio who run a program to educate kids about the evils of drunk driving. Actually not bad.
Another is done by the Hackensack (NJ) Medical Center Trauma unit that pretty much recreates a night of teenage partying all the way from house party through to open heart massage in the ER to death. Not for the squeamish.
Speaking of unlearning. In NJ you will fail your driving test if you fail to put your arm over the passenger seat while parallel parking. In PA you will fail if you fail to use the passenger side mirror while parking. Shat you won't learn unless to take the state prep courses and which you probably either need to unlearn or minimize compared to what is really important.

http://www.torontosun.com/entertainment/celebrities/2011/01/14/16893481.html
Scott Thompson was still fuming Friday that the Dire Straits song Money for Nothing has been banned in Canada for containing the slur “faggot.”
“Shakespeare would be rolling over in his g-word,” said Thompson, the 51-year-old actor/comedian best known for his work with the Kids in the Hall troupe.
“When you ban a word, you make the word more powerful. All this banning that’s going on just makes (the hate) go deeper and deeper into the soul, where it festers. Let it it out. I want to know what you really think. I can handle it.
“It makes me feel like we’re five years old and need to go potty. The n-word, I guess, is number 1 and the f- word is number 2.”
Other prominent gay Canadian performers also weighed in.
Rick Mercer, host of CBC’s Rick Mercer Report, said “the song doesn’t offend me, because it’s all about context, and it’s a character line spoken by an ignorant person who is jealous of a glam rock and roll star.
“Issues like this crowd out real issues of intolerance. In Ontario, the Halton Catholic school board banned the formation of gay-straight alliances in high schools. The chair of the board compared them to Nazi groups. That’s something worth talking about. I’m more concerned with helping kids at risk than offending the sensibilities of older people who listen to classic rock stations at work.”
