Quite the rant on Speedtv.com
Open-wheel racing used to think it was above the shenanigans of NASCAR. Open-wheel could fly on its own merit, on the fact that it was a better product -- or so the thought went. Check the latest ratings, folks. Nobody cares about product. The cartoon version of racing is tearing it up, with fans eagerly awaiting the next catfight between racers' girlfriends.
Selling open-wheel racing in this era is like selling Cristal to a Cro-Magnon. He'll have no idea what it is or how enjoyable it can be. Show him how to bash the bottle over his buddy's head, though, and you'll sell case after case. Never try to sell a complicated product to people with the attention span of a fleas. You'll only annoy yourself and piss off the fleas.
Instead, make it simple and squalid, and watch it fly off the shelves.
This weekend at Texas, the Cheever/Andretti feud will get an inordinate amount of play, and, like the times we try to surf past Maury Povich, we won't be able to turn away.

Sad thing is, if I am reading the article right, he actually thinks the soap opera / Jerry Springer crap is a good idea. wtf? :shakehead
