Quite the rant on Speedtv.com

Open-wheel racing used to think it was above the shenanigans of NASCAR. Open-wheel could fly on its own merit, on the fact that it was a better product -- or so the thought went. Check the latest ratings, folks. Nobody cares about product. The cartoon version of racing is tearing it up, with fans eagerly awaiting the next catfight between racers' girlfriends.

Selling open-wheel racing in this era is like selling Cristal to a Cro-Magnon. He'll have no idea what it is or how enjoyable it can be. Show him how to bash the bottle over his buddy's head, though, and you'll sell case after case. Never try to sell a complicated product to people with the attention span of a fleas. You'll only annoy yourself and piss off the fleas.

Instead, make it simple and squalid, and watch it fly off the shelves.

This weekend at Texas, the Cheever/Andretti feud will get an inordinate amount of play, and, like the times we try to surf past Maury Povich, we won't be able to turn away.

Jeff Olsen tirade (http://www.speedtv.com/commentary/26111/)

Sad thing is, if I am reading the article right, he actually thinks the soap opera / Jerry Springer crap is a good idea. wtf? :shakehead

No need to turn away if it is never turned on in the first place.

Man, I hope that's sarcasm, but I seriously doubt that it is. :shakehead :saywhat:

It's like throwing crap on a wall and seeing what sticks. Maybe you will also pull in the type of fans you want. Publicity and attention surely can't make things any worse (unless it's the big one).

Brainfart's basic response (to the attempted murder) was; Marco needs to "chalk it up to experience, and not put himself in that position again." UBFL! For his part Eddie gets new sponsorship for the Texas bash. Afterall, he did win the Indy 500. :shakehead (PS-Marco will be "called to the trailer" to be asked to tone down his criticism. The League will handle things on TV through skillfully manipulating, uh, editing of clips to keep the interest going in their own way!)
