They are using them to chase PGA golfers this weekend. They are freaking out some of the pros because the cameramen now move much faster and they seem to appear out of nowhere. Guess they are very popular with the crowd too.

Golf is not a sport, it's a game. To me a sport is something that requires you to be in very good physical shape to be successful. While golf certainly requires a lot of skill it does not require someone to be in peak physical shape.

True, it's like pool on a giant hilly table.

I just don't get the Segway.
$$$ worth of complex technology to do what physics would do for you for free if you just put the wheels one in front of the other rather than side-by-side.
I live near downtown, and I've ridden an electric scooter to work every day for the past 3+ years. I paid well under $300 for it (being a gearhead, I couldn't resist tweaking a few more $ into it, but it's still under $500), it goes 25+mph vs. the Segway's 12.5, has the same range as a NiMH Segway (but with much, much, much cheaper lead-acid batteries), and folds up to fit under my desk.
What exactly would that extra $4500 buy me?
:saywhat:
can you climb stairs and stand still hands-free? :p

Remember back to Ginger/IT, the working code names for what the inventor would name Segway.
The original Segway conspiracy theorists basically claim that Ginger/IT wasn't the two wheeled gyroscopic pedestrian mover that it turned out to be. Some of the people who saw the prototype of IT have said that Segway wasn't IT but that they can't say what it was. So, why not? Well, some think it was of such a paradigm invention as to be too ahead of its time and that the US govt put it under wraps. Cold fusion? Teleportation? A Nimbus 2000? No one can say or rather, no one will say.
Here is a quote from 3Com founder, and one if the VIP's who saw the original IT Robert Metcalfe -"... who is a friend of Mr. Kamen, told me via e- mail: "Some months ago when speculation was running high, I said that Kamen's It was more important than the Internet, but not as important as cold fusion, had cold fusion worked out. The It I was talking about, which I did not disclose, was NOT Segway. That's all I can say." Link (http://www.nytimes.com/2001/12/20/technology/circuits/20DIAR.html?ex=1153627200&en=77cb05814b7d4831&ei=5070)
So the conspiracy theorists claim that Kamen had to release something to the public to throw them off the trail. He couldn't very well say "my invention was so cool the govt took it and won't let anyone know what it is." So he produced the Segway, an invention he had been working on for a long time. it's expensive because they don't really want to mass produce them.

Formula cars require fitness :gomer:
my belief has always been that it's a sport if its a game where if you improve your physical fitness, you can get better at the sport.
you can be fat and race, but you'll be better at racing if you are physically fit.
you can be fat and box people out in the NBA, but you'll be better if that fat turns into muscle
you can be fat and play second base for the Cleveland Indians, but you wont need to play in shallow right field because you move so slow if you are physically fit (ron belliard).
you can be fat and play golf, but you will get better at it if you become more physically fit. look at craig stadler and how he improved when he lost weight. look at how the best golfer in the world, is also the most fit one.
oh and no, you dont get better at golf as you get drunk. if you do, then you just really suck at it to begin with.
thats what I think anyway.
