I rarely listen to Dark Side of the Moon anymore because I played it a lot when I was in high school and got tired of it. I was listening to a compliation MP3 today and listened to it all the way through for the first time in more than a year. It was kind of cool to be 'surprised' at how great an album it is even 33 years after its release. The good stuff stays good.

Yep, the good stuff stays good. My daughter asked me to teach her to play Kashmir on the guitar a couple of weeks ago and that reminded me I hadn't broken out any Zep in a long, long time. Some was still really good, some wasn't.

I made a party MP3 disc for the boat of an ecletic mix of old/new heavy/lite/ etc and I threw a couple of Supertramp song on there (Logical Song and Breakfast in America) and was amazed at how 'fresh' and 'today' those songs sounded.

Floyd is one of those super groups that I think people will still be listening too for decades to come. Interesting considering how mello and atmosheric much of their music is.

Yep. Pretty amazingly coherent concept album considering that most of that material was recycled from previous Pink Floyd projects (ditto 'Animals', one of my favorites). IMHO, it's too bad that the album is such an icon, and therefore carries so much cultural baggage, that it's hard to actually 'hear' the music for what it is.

You should hear Pink Floyd's first concept show.
'The Man and The Journey' not only has great music, but some of the most memorable song titles ever, including such gems as:

The Labyrinthes of Auximenes
The Pink Jungle (my 6-yr old's favorite)
Behold, The Temple of Light
Beset by Creatures of the Deep

...much of which, in typical Pink Floyd fashion, ended up recycled in still other projects...

Some of it, especially pre-DSOTM, absolutely thumps.

RaceGrrl: Have you ever synched it up to the Wizard of OZ DVD? Very cool.

I seem to get on a Pink Floyd fix every couple months too. I've got hours or PF CD's including bootleg concert stuff. RaceGrrl...

I am always on a Pink Floyd fixation. Am listening to Pink Floyds Animals, Dark Side and Wish you were here albums as we speak tonight.

I never get tired of them totally, just have to change albums. I've listened to every Wall song about 100 times a year for 23 years, so I'm giving that a break while I get some work done tonight.

I never appreciated when my dad would listen to Ummagumma, but am now starting to see things in that and the Final Cut that I never realized before. Its like finding a complete new album for me since I just refused to listen to anything but The Wall and Dark Side as a kid.

EDIT: As you will notice my Location is Dark Side of the Moon here on OC. On crapwagon it is Welcome to the Machine(used to be DSOTM also, and at one times Wilkes home phone number :D ). Doesn't get much better than Floyd. And when I tire of one album, I just put on another, rinse, and repeat.

It is amazing how crisp many of the transitions from song to song are, and how well they match up. Such as the witches arrival, the falling from the fence and strawman. pretty interesting stuff, but seems more ironic than planned. but who knows.
