For the first time, I understand why so many people were frightened at the dawn of the machine age. They were afraid of what the machines could do. I'm feeling a little bit of that right now considering these things are small enough to travel through the human body yet work together in groups.

The article itself is very logical, especially with regard to the destruction of the human race. As for grammar and syntax, it sounds like it was written by an 8 year old. That is fully explained at the beginning with, "I taught myself everything I know just by reading the internet," I'm beginning to understand how previous generations thought the world was spinning out of their control. Thanks, SteveH for keeping us informed at least.

On a wildly not-quite-related thought. I see that California is posting 620 cameras in forests to spot fires right as they start. Anyone can sign up to have access to all the camera feeds and call in when they see something. This technique has been used in very successfully in Africa to catch poachers. Could this watching be done by AI? It's certainly tedious.

The fundamental problem is that "think of them like animals" assumes that you never give them more than animal level intelligence. As soon as you get anywhere past that the question of "fairness" comes into play. Is the "partnership" equal? We certainly don't intend it to be. As soon as they can comprehend that as the case we have a problem.
Often when people say, "Trust the science," they really mean, "Trust the judgement of scientists and engineers." There is plenty of evidence that's not always wise.

I think I'm finally just too frikkin' old. That article made very little sense to me. I get the concept and I think it has legs as described, but Wall Street is beginning to sound like the world of Modern Art:

A lot of stuff is being flung at the wall right now. We'll see what sticks. I think a lot will depend on how much people decide they want to adopt some practices that are more convenient for them (delivery services, etc) vs "getting back to normal."

That's actually my day job. It's a logical extension of the machine learning tools we'd previously used for what began as electronic document classification and data extraction, stuff I've been neck deep in for about a decade now. Once you've developed tools and workflows for bringing paper into electronic archives in an organized manner, it's a short step to extracting data to populate databases, and an even shorter step to skipping the paper altogether and performing intelligent routing and task creation based on the content of, well, anything at all, and skipping some (or all) of the desks that normally need crossed.
It's been coming either way, but the stay-at-home mandates of the age of COVID has broken down some of the resistance to change that we've been butting our heads against for years.

True, but in the past the rate of change was driven by more natural market forces. Now we've applied a whole array of forces that have grossly distorted the market and accelerated change at a rate that we probably don't even recognize yet. Some people are going to be really shocked when the extra aid is cut and rent is due again and they find that their forklift now drives itself.

The deal will hopefully create a stable home for Boston Dynamics, which has continued to pump out the world's most impressive robots despite continual ownership changes. The company was spun off from MIT in 1992 and survived for most of its life on DARPA research grants. Google acquired the independent Boston Dynamics in 2013 as part of a brief interest in robotics led by Android co-founder Andy Rubin. Google freed the company from surviving on military contracts, but when Rubin left Google a year later, the executive interest in robotics left with him.
Google sold Boston Dynamics to the Japanese holding company Softbank in 2017 for a reported $165 million, a shockingly low price. By December 2020, Softbank found itself in dire financial straits after some of its other investments went south (Uber, WeWork, OneWeb) and started selling off crown jewels like Arm. Hyundai wanted to invest in more "mobility solutions," and Softbank was able to flip Boston Dynamics for a tidy profit.

The dark side is being realized.... Chatbots, basically software that can converse with a human via text or voice married to artificial intelligence. Chatbots are increasing becoming more common. Will begin to replace call centers. And we all basically have one in our phones (Siri or similar) or digital assistants (Alexa or similar). I'm now seeing chatbots included in mobile banking apps. A perfect marriage of that technology.

I saw that, and didn't like it one bit, especially the gliding around the floor part.
I do think I could have swatted it's shot. It took forever to get set up.
