Skift reports retailers like Amazon keep making everyday experiences more seamless, and that means that consumers will see an ever more glaring contrast with the travel sector's often outdated processes. Amazon would like consumers to treat their hands as a payment card, and the first travel sector application is at an airport shop in Texas. Travel retailer Hudson, owned by Dufry, said it had deployed Amazon’s palm recognition system Amazon One post-security near Gate 10 at Dallas Love Field Airport. Passengers can pay at the store either by using a payment card with an automated machine or by holding their palm above an Amazon scanner. Why a palm scan instead of a fingerprint, you may ask? It’s easier for today’s scanners to pick out the details of a palm vein pattern at a contactless distance than to accurately scan a fingerprint without the finger contacting a scanner. The pandemic’s push for contactless tech has amplified interest in contactless technologies. A palm print also may offer more granular detail to improve accuracy. First-time users have to sign up for the service in person. A consumer uses an enrollment kiosk to record their palm print and match it with their identity, entering their credit or debit card details and mobile number.

One of my travel agent friends said the same thing. "Minority Report" is getting closer all the time. Edit: Do note that I'm the one that sees this as the future of boarding passes. The airlines have not breathed that yet. With all the pushback on facial recognition, I can't see how we can avoid this, at least for part of the population.

A Robotic Dog Will Be On Patrol In Pompeii
arstechnica.com reports robot dogs now prowl the ruins, guarding the city's dead against the ravages of time. That’s not a movie plot. It’s what’s actually happening at the 2,000-year-old Roman ruins of Pompeii, in Southern Italy. Boston Dynamics’ robot dog, Spot, will help archaeologists and preservation crews by patrolling the 66-hectare site for signs of erosion, damage, and looting. In 2013, UNESCO found that erosion and weathering were taking a toll on the parts of the site archaeologists had excavated so far. To protect the ruined city and keep restoration workers safe, park authorities needed to find new ways to monitor for damage, restore ancient structures, and preserve them for the future. That’s where Spot comes in: The bright yellow robot dog is part of a project called Smart@POMPEI, which uses high-tech tools to help keep an eye on the ancient site. Spot can maneuver easily across uneven rock and rubble, slip down narrow passageways between ancient walls and piles of volcanic debris, or crawl into crumbling underground tunnels. Spot is a four-legged walking robot that can cross uneven terrain while carrying small payloads like cameras and sensors. Like a flying drone, the doglike robot can follow a programmed route, or operators can steer it via remote control. Viral videos have shown Spot performing acrobatics and even using its front foot to hold a door open for a buddy. The robot’s almost-but-not-quite lifelike way of moving unnerves some observers while its potential for military and surveillance use unnerve arguably more of them. Spot is the successor to a bigger, heavier four-legged robot called BigDog, which Boston Dynamics designed to carry gear alongside infantry in the field.

Just looking at this thread after a long time. Coffee beans are hard. Fruits and berries not so much. Apples are probably the hardest so I can see why they started with them. It looks as if the trees have to be quite far apart, much further than usual. Fewer trees/apples per acre that way. Plus they have to be trimmed to pretty close specifications. I suppose they have robots to do that also but I wonder how many branches/apples they lose that way. All in all, fascinating. Pretty far from hitting the olive trees with stick and catching the olives in a blanket.
