View Full Version : Creepy robot
Big Dog is a four legged robot being developed by Boston Dynamics. Is it just me or is this kind of creepy.

Yes it is creepy looking. Every time I see robot with legs I shake my head as it's already been proven, no matter how advanced their balance software/gyros are, a group of small furry sentient beings can take them down with trip wire and swinging logs.
Waste 'o money.

Creepy for certain. Never ceases to amaze me that people are willing to spend $ millions to invent a mechanical version of something perfectly good that already exists in nature. Llama comes to mind in this case. Sure footed, large enough to carry quite a lot, easy to manage and can be trained to react on it's own to complex situations. The only thing missing would be the scream of the two stroke weedwacker motor....
oc
Do you get wool off a llama? :)
That's sort of nightmarish in a Tim Burton sort of way.
With today's technology, the only reason to have humanoid leg robots is to make the disabled walk.
Can't get funding for that, though. Need to put something camoflaged on it, paint it green and pitch it to the military.

At a farm on the weekend and was given the same spiel about Alpaccas ie: smart, pack animals and they give wool as well, which is why I asked about the Llama's.

Sure, Llama fleece is valuable, though not nearly as valuable as Alpaca fleece.
Both will pack your stuff around over really rough ground. They are popular around here for fleece and packing. A lot of the country around here stands on end and is rugged besides. Pack horses and mules have their limitations.

Tissue replacement may apply to all body parts
By Ann Parson
New York Times News Service
Published August 1, 2006
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- At the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, Dr. Anthony Atala and more than 80 colleagues are working on tissue-replacement projects for practically every body part -- blood vessels and nerves, muscles, cartilage and bones, esophagus and trachea, pancreas, kidneys, liver, heart and even uterus.
Already the urologist and tissue engineer grows fully functioning bladders from scratch. To repair or replace parts, Atala and other researchers seed a biodegradable scaffold with cells and insert it into the body, where the cells, if all goes smoothly, mature into functioning tissue.
In the long term, the scientists hope, patients may no longer have to wait on the national transplant list "for someone to die so they can live," as Atala puts it. Organs could be tailor-made for people.
<snip>
While tissue engineers aren't likely to regenerate complex parts on a regular basis anytime soon -- least of all the human head -- Atala, who is also director of the National Regenerative Medicine Foundation, recently received $1 million from the Defense Department for research that will be undertaken by a coalition of research centers. A primary goal is to grow limbs for injured soldiers.

Boston Dynamics Is Getting Ready to Produce Lots of SpotMinis (https://spectrum.ieee.org/automaton/robotics/industrial-robots/boston-dynamics-spotminis)
https://spectrum.ieee.org/image/MzEwNTAwNA.jpeg
At CEBIT back in June, Boston Dynamics’ CEO Marc Raibert mentioned in a talk that they’re currently building about 100 SpotMinis, and that they’re planning on scaling that up to be able to build something like 1,000 SpotMinis by the end of 2019. This has attracted some attention recently, since it seems like Boston Dynamics is ready to “productify” its robots on a commercial scale, and Raibert even mentioned some areas in which they’ve had interest from potential customers. “We’re trying to take what we already know, and reduce it to practice by making robot products,” he said. “Robot products are new for Boston Dynamics … we’ve been operating for a long time working on the future, and now we’re trying to make practical products.”

Fascinating to me how difficult this is. [read: how amazing our own bodies are] At least 10 years ago Honda's Asimo was the talk of the town because it could go up and down steps. Locomotion has advanced dramatically but it's been a decade and it's obviously still got a long way to go.

Viola wanted umpire Tim Detweiler to overrule some close calls. Detweiler declined, and things snowballed from there.

My Roomba is gonna be pissed. Seriously, how are they going to account for the fact that all that work will just be done somewhere else using those same robots? So then we're back to tariffs which everyone now hates because... you know.
First the boring manufacturing work was sent overseas and it was, "Who cares, it's boring and nobody wants to do it. High tech manufacturing is the future." Then when high tech manufacturing started going overseas it was, "Who cares, service industries are the future." My comment was, "Right, what are we going to do, make a living delivering each other pizzas?" After seeing the line of Door Dash delivery drivers waiting at my local BBQ place I think that's closer to true than I thought.
I really think that to have a strong middle class we need to produce tangible things. That's the stuff at the core of the economy that makes all those service jobs viable. The only way we can be competitive producing things without paying third world wages is by improving productivity through automation. If you tax that automation you're simply making us uncompetitive and the great sucking sound (RIP Ross Perot) continues.
I‘Ve had this conversation with my son who has two children, plan their education well so that they will have a future in a robotic world. Which is pretty hard to do since we really don’t know what that would be. But if someone would have told you a decade ago that you’d no longer sweep your floors, a robot would do it, you would have thought they were nuts. We probably can’t imagine what our future will be. I suggest looking at past episodes of the Jetson for guidance.

Boeing Relies On Humans Again After Robots Fail Its 777X Jet Fuselage Assembly
TravelWireNews reports robots will outperform humans, we're told, but Boeing engineers aren't that convinced. After years of struggle with a robotic system that flubbed the assembly of its giant 777X jet, they've gone back to human labor again. America's biggest aerospace corporation has finally dumped the robots that were used to assemble two main fuselage sections on the Boeing 777 and 777X long-haul airliners, according to Bloomberg. Awkwardly called FAUB, or Fuselage Automated Upright Build, the system was introduced with great fanfare four years ago, advertised as an example of Boeing's innovative spirit. It featured robots working in unison to drill holes precisely and put together the outer frame of the widebody jets. But the top-notch robots, made by a company based in Germany, lacked the famous German accuracy and quality. They couldn't synchronize drilling holes and inserting fasteners, which contributed to a snowballing of catch-up work that had to be finished by humans. Back in 2016, the Seattle Times reported that problems were amassing at Boeing's final assembly line. "FAUB is a horrible failure," one Boeing worker admitted at the time. "They keep forc ing these unfinished, damaged airplanes on us." Another veteran mechanic said each section was coming out of FAUB with hundreds of incomplete jobs. "It's a nightmare," he said. Now, Boeing will rely on skilled workers again to manually put fasteners into holes drilled by a system known as "flex tracks." While it's still automated, it's not as big and autonomous as the faulty FAUB.
