Love the railroad tracks. Has a date been set? I heard prior to Long Beach.

Last I checked, race track goes under train tracks.

The race circuit in Phoenix looks terrible. Give me the oval any day of the week over it.

The 2007 MMP race will act as a counter balance to that track :D

Have you guys ever found anything NOT to complain about? :D

Looks pretty decent to me, perhaps there is something I don't know about the streets they are running on, but looks like it's got some nice twisty bits and some decent straightaways. Might see some passing there....

Edit 1: Just noticed the train tracks. Could be a problem, but then again look at SJ this year. I think they may have figured that situation out...

Edit 2: 7th St. (west of the ballpark) goes over the tracks....as in WAY over the tracks, as in bridge. 1st st. goes under the tracks. Neither is a railroad crossing, so you guys can get your collective panties out of a bunch. :D

Heeeeerrrrrreeeeeee's Googlemaps!

Okay...

The Phoenix pit lane area looks to be a bit seedy. According to the map the darker orange box is grandstands. How they will do that with a block full of buildings there I can't say. The suites (lighter orange) also seem to reside on top of a building. And the corrugated iron roofed industrial pile of rust at the end of pit lane (red) looks like it contains a epa waste site inside.

Perhaps that area is established for the pitlane and suites because the buildings there are already condemned and set for demolition. I have lived in some pretty nice areas of Chicago and still have a few eyesores that from time to time need to get torn down. Failed industry, abandoned property, etc. I am willing to wait and see what they do with it before I shoot the idea down completely...

Amen. It even makes the old Phoenix F1 layouts look less crappy.

Well, if both the Vegas and Phoenix race areas were beautifully landscaped and manicured districts, we probably wouldn't be talking about a race in either market.

The promoters clearly stated in Phoenix that the goal is to use the race as one means to help gentrify the area. To pull a Long Beach if you will. That theory would seem to apply in Vegas as well.

Okay, two weekends ago I was in Las Vegas and had the opportunity to 'drive' the proposed track.

It's a winner, folks. Any way you cut it.

I am making the prediction right now that turn 12 is going to become a signature corner, not just for Champ Car but to all motor sport. Turn 11 is going to be a chicane to slow the cars before hitting the pit straight.... and hit it they will. In the space of about half a city block, the street drops about 30 feet ro pass under the rail tracks. The road bottoms out and begins climbing back up right at what will be the turn-in point for turn 12, and doesn't level off until the exit of the turn. So turn 12 is a blind, rising left hander that will be approached at close to 130 mph in a Champ Car (est) and just might be flat, given the banking and compression and whatnot.

Oh, and did I mention the 25-foot noise abatement wall that will be staring the drivers in the face on the right side of the track?

I plan on watching everything from right there........

The kinks on the pit straight are not a concern, altho the braking area for turn 1 is sorta narrow (there's a median) and could make for a hectic first lap. The intersection is huge, tho, so that will help. The track dips down thru turn 2 to get under the railroad tracks again, which could make that a fun corner as well. The rest of the track is fairly straighforward, altho I think the section between 4 and 8 will really tell the tale of who is quick at this track, as it's a great 'rhythm' piece of track. (Think of the 'Madness' part of Mid-Ohio, only with more slot machines)

The only real negative about the place is.... the place itself. It's depressing. Lost count of the number of pawn shops and bail bondsmen we drove by. The area right around downtown is okay, but getting there from the south (the Strip) is sorta shady. But then, Long Beach was like that once upon a time, too!

Viva Las Vegas!! :D
