Spy ware scams HELP!?!?!?!

I have been hit with a slew of these spyware trojans and am looking for removal advice.

I seem to have SpyWareQuake, Malware, Wipe SpyGuard these seem to come from IntCodec 6.0 .avi files.

There seem to be a number of help forums with instructions to remove them, but some require downloading a utility to help get rid of them. I am suspicious of everything now and want to know who I should trust to help me get these programs off my system.

At least I feel like I know who the people here are since I see you post all the time, but I'm kind of paranoid about taking advice from somebody who shows up in a google search figuring they may be the same people who put the #**@ on my computer in the first place.

Carefull with 'Hijack This', it will remove freindly items along with system criticals. It's recommended you run, post the log in a Hijack this forum and let the admins tell you what to remove and what to keep. Good program. It's saved me from a few reformats.

I hang out here (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/cleanup) . IF you follow their instructions they will help you to the bitter end. If you don't follow their list of do's and don'ts they can be a bit titchy.

Most of the programs they ask you to use are free and will help you clean your PC. They also use Hijack this but as others here have cautioned, it can lead to problems if not used as directed by someone who knows what they are doing. Obviously some of the guys and girls here are very PC saavy and can help you more than me.

One more thing I think is bad.
I usually like to close MSN when it's not in use. (I don't use it all, just the kids)
I cannot close it because "it is in use by another program", sounds like it has been taken over.

There are a few things in that hijackthis report that look questionable.

Hijackthis is 1 part of the clearing of your system. Malware is usually a file that changes the Windows registry (think of the index for a book) Fixing something in Hijackthis will fix the registry entry, but may not remove all the files, and will re-infect later.

You should have a basic 3 pronged approach to malware. Download Ad-Aware SE. When you run it the first time, update it first then scan the system.

2nd, download Spybot Search and Destroy - update first, then scan the system.

Those 2 programs should get most of your malware.

I noticed that you are still running service pack 1, if you can, update windows to SP2. that way you have the lastest protection from windows exploits.

If you are not sure of what things are in your Hijackthis report, a simple way is to google each executable file in that report. Google will return simple descriptions of what each .exe file does. For example, if you google firefox.exe, there will be pages that explain what firefox does. Its a great way to learn what your system is running.

A quick glance at your report and google tell me:


pmmon.exe is popups
isamini.exe is probably a trojan virus causing popups
MWSOEMON.EXE is a search bar for mywebsearch
msctupd.exe is probably a trojan malware program


Run both adaware and spybot, do another HJT report and repost it.

Good advice dm. I run IE7, fully patched and go to some...er Spicoli type sites ;) and have never had a virus or crap on the PC. As a pre-empt I use Spywareblaster (needs updating manually for free ver) and Spywareguard (pretty old now) as well as paid ver of Pest Patrol and Trojanhunter as well as Zonelabs Security Suite. Possibly overkill but the PC is crapfree. :)

Oh yeah, almost forgot.

Spybot S&D has a feature called immunize. It is supposed to help block known exploits and such. Once you update spybot, go to immunize and allow it to block. I have never had a problem with it interfering with anything.

I don't see anything obvious in that log. The trojans may however be cloaked as a legitimate looking service.

It looks like the offending files have been removed. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and all protection on.

Thanks guys. If anybody see's anything suspicious here let me know or if anything else needs to be manually cleaned up. Some clean up instructions I read included a lot of manual deleting of registry files, which makes me nervious.

this googles as a trojan.... double check to see if the files are where they claim to be. they all say file missing. If the 3 files are NOT there, just delete them with hijackthis.

The guys over there walked me through how to clean it out, step by step, and managed to banish the bugs to the ether....

Firewall is being controlled by group policy. All control buttons are faded out and inoperable. I can't figure out where to go to change group policy yet.

It appears that even that option has been destroyed. I think it is probably time save my data and reformat. The firewall seems to be removed from the registry. Not sure if I can reload just the firewall. For the time being, I'm doing no business on that machine.
