In A.J.'s defence Bill Elliot could not qualify that car either. but dead last sucks.

Well aware of the Cup tradition of introducing new drivers to the wall with an accidental bump, perhaps AJ was thinking ahead to the next race at Phoenix, preferring to be tapped out at 130mph rather than 190mph.

Just a theory.

He won't make the Daytona 500, and by mid-season his girl friend will be seen hanging around Reed Sorrensen.

It won't matter next year when the Toyota's have 50 bhp more than any other car on the track. It'll be interesting to see how NASCAR handles that, but I seriously doubt that Toyota will have any trouble qualifying.

With that said, I really don't want A.J. to embarass himself in NASCAR because that would reflect poorly on Champcar. Other than that, I couldn't care less.

From PT's column on Autosports. Kinda confirms that AJA hasn't thought about the change he was making beyond the money.

On the morning before qualifying, I got a smartass text message from him saying, "Hey PT, what kind of plane should I buy?" So I was sitting watching qualifying and he didn't make the cut, so I sent him back a message, "Forget planes, I'd start worrying about how to f*ing qualify. Bill Elliott outqualified you, and you told me he sucks." Strangely enough, I never heard anything back from him.

Tracy's take on the chances of AJA making the race are about the same as posted here on various threads.

So if he doesn't get on the grid at Daytona, well once you're in that spiral and miss the first couple of races and you're not in that top 35, it starts getting impossible. Look at Robby Gordon: he has a lot of experience in those things now, and great equipment, and last year he was often not making races. A few of those he was fast enough to get in, but got bumped out because he wasn't in the top 35.

AJ's just got in this deal where he's making a lot of money, but if he doesn't start making the race, he's gonna get spat out real quick. He might not have thought this far ahead before, but I bet you he's thinking about it now. Right, except now it's too late and there is no turning back. Toyota is going to chew up and spit out the most promising US Champ Car driver in a generation.

From the latest RACER mag. A.J. answering a question about the youngsters who get their start in the Skip Barber National series.

"It's not purely an age thing, it's a maturity thing. Is a 16 year old ready for Atlantic? Mentally strong enough? In general, I don't think so. But there are exceptions. Nelson Phillipe [ninth in Barber Dodge in 2003]... He was able to fight through coming to the big cars early. I applaud him for that. And the 13-year-old who raced with you guys, John Edwards... He's 15 now, he's got 18 to 18-year-old maturity... You know, at some point, I'm gonna meet that maturity level"
