View Full Version : WTF is with my IE7?

I use firefox 98% of the time, but there are a few applications where I hafta use IE (porn and whatnot... just... don't you worry yourself about it). I recently upgraded to IE7 to take advantage of the tabbed browsing since I'm so used to it in Firefox. This morning when I tried to open IE, it pops open to my home page, but without any toolbars up on the top. WTF did they go? How do I get 'em back?

No idea. I took the upgrade for both my PC and laptop at home but haven't had any issues so far.

Try hitting F11. I think that is the toggle for fullscreen.

Not sure about what the problem is. But found a plug-in (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1419/) a while back that I use from time-to-time for sites that are not Firefox compatible. When a page doesn't open right, you just right-click and select "View Page in IE Tab" and it will open an IE tab within Firefox. It has worked great for me so far and it hasn't caused any problems as far as I can tell.

I can't make all the toolbars disappear even when I try to.

Looks like you're in kiosk mode. Not sure how you'd get there without the command line option to launch it that way.

Other possibility is a web page, say one for a public library or charity fund raiser, put your browser into a full screen, no toolbars mode and then saved that as your defaults. If that's the case you should be able to bring up your preferences and change them back. Anyone got the alt key combo to bring up the options menu?

Can you see the menus if you press and hold the ALT key?

Press Alt-o, then open up "toolbars >" then check the toolbars you want to be shown. :gomer:

Nope. I get nuttin'.

Press Alt-o, then open up "toolbars >" then check the toolbars you want to be shown. :gomer:
Alt-o gives me nothing as well. :irked: I even tried to re-install IE7 again and I end up the same way.

Control Panel > Internet Options > "Advanced" Tab. At the bottom "Reset". Restores all default settings.

Guess what? It still didn't help. But, check this.

I opened and closed IE7 after doing what Cam directed. Same sheet. I rebooted. Nuthin'. It even went thru the IE7 start-up where it takes you on a tutorial about the tabbed browsing and such, but I had no fekkin' tabs!

Then I tried clicking on Microsoft Update from the START menu and IE7 loads with all the toolbars! I close it and open it from one of the shortcuts. No toolbars. Open MS Update again, and they're there. I keep it open and go about my browsing business and they're still there. Close it and try a normal shortcut and they're no where to be found. I basically gotta start it thru MS Update to use it. WTF is right... :gomer:

Try bringing up the "Run..." option under your "Start" menu.

Enter "iexplore" and run that.

If it looks normal someone or something has monkied with your Explorer shortcut to start you in kiosk mode.

You may need to fix how Internet Shortcuts are open by default.

In Windows Explorer:

Tools->Folder Options...
File Types tab
Internet Shortcut should be there near the top.

I tried this and the first time it opened it was correct. I closed it and opened it thru the Run command again. This time it came up w/o the menu bars. Golldang gooney, I tell ya.

Let's see, click 'Advanced'.
Select 'Open' and click 'Edit'.

Mine says:

Application used to perform action:
rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l

I only point to this because IE may be opening with some type of flags to hide the menus.

But it's odd when you run iexplore from the run dialog, it opens okay once, then the next time you open it from run, it's messed up. That should be consistent.

I suspect some errrrrr..... adult website has already found a hole in IE7 and installed some form of browser hijacker. ;)

Already backed it up on the portable HD. I don't want to take the chance of having to go back to my wife after using porn for so long. :D

Don't think I'll try this today, tho. Sounds like a good thing to eff-up on Friday morn.

Cam might be onto something with his browser hijack theory, because in your first screenshot it looks like something has come along and disabled AVG Anti-Virus for you.

If it were me, I'd run Spybot Search&Destroy, Ad-Aware, HijackThis, do a virus scan, reboot as necessary, and see if that clears up the problem.

Oh OH! I am hardly a geek as everyone here can attest but I never use the automatic update feature. I always like to see what I'm downloading.

Further to "I am not a geek" .... is this situation fixable by a simple system restore back to the good old days before I7 darkened your door? Or is that too simplistic an idea?

It can be removed with 'Add or Remove programs' if you want to get rid of it. No need for a system restore.

Mine has been sitting there for a couple of weeks. I just unclick it and download the rest of the stuff. It means I have a yellow exclamation point in my lower right hand tray but I'm pretty good at ignoring it.

Here's another ungeekly question. If I remove the program, then I don't have it at all so how do I open the many links to webpages that use it? Much of my email sends me to supplier websites or longer announcements that I do want to read.

Corollary: My IE is not working well now. People kept telling me to restore it (somehow, d'uh, don't know how). I never did. If I try that now, will I get the I7 automatically??

Not really. I have XP running on a partition of my MacBook Pro. It makes it a rather schizophrenic machine. Ying & yang.

I will say that a 2.33 gHz core 2 duo 17" Macbook Pro makes one very fast PC.

When you uninstall IE7, it will put you back where you were, which is IE 6 SP 1 presumably. Your links should continue to open in your default browser.

I'm not sure if you can still download older versions of IE (at least officially). IE7 isn't really bad, but I rarely use it. The people around here just have you scared. ;)

My wife is the computer expert in the family, apparently. ;)
As she needs it for the work she does and I just "play games", I just sit back and let her do what she wants. Most of the time.Which is how I have IE7 and not Firefox.

Had problems last night, tabs not opening and closing, could not get Outlook Express to load, If my wife can not get to read her emails, she's going to explode.

OMG! As if on queue. I'm trying to buy movie tickets online using IE7, I get the BSOD, then this:
Windows could not start because the follwing file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM.

Now it wants the "Setup CD-ROM", which I don't have of course. Well, there's another 8 lb. paperweight courtesy of XP. :flame:

And people wonder why Mac owners are so fanatical about their gear.

I was just listening to the local radio idiot who spouts computer stuff.

He says IE7 *and* Vista *and* Office 2007 *ALL* have a cut off switch. If they find any pirated (presumably Microsoft only) software anywhere on your computer, they cut off. You can still work but what you're using doesn't work right. Don't know how that's gonna go down in the "community."

I think you described him perfectly. Not true at all. (Vista will practically lock down if it's pirated however.)

In the case of IE7, I believe to install it on Windows XP it does the WGA check. I also imagine Office 2007 will use the same authentication check as Windows Vista does. I'm not sure why people are so up in arms. I don't think there is much question that piracy of Windows and Office hurt Microsoft's bottom line. For a lot of software you could argue that a person wouldn't buy it anyway, but good luck running a PC without an OS. If you have a legit copy, you'll be fine. It will work right, or you shouldn't have much trouble rectifying a problem with a phone call.

Some folks just want to be able to take what they want without paying. But a lot of folks feel that once they purchase something it's theirs to do with as they please. They don't want to worry that upgrading their system or moving to a new PC is going to trigger some cut-off switch that will require them to call Redmond and prove they're within the obscure boundaries of license terms that they don't understand (assuming that they are).

The truth is that most people don't really agree with Microsoft's EULA even if they agree to it just to get their software working. The more MS tries to enforce those terms, the more it will push people to other options. From my perspective that's a good thing. :)

Yeah, I saw earlier they wanted to really limit the mobility to another machine. There was a pretty big deal made in the entusiast community about it and they backed away. You should definitely be able to install a copy on anything you want. Microsoft should also offer some type of discount to families who want to install it on multiple PCs. I know for the large majority of people, they'll just get it pre-installed and it won't even matter anyway. I don't think the licensing terms will affect me much unless there's sme day where building a laptop is cheaper than buying one.

:) Actually, I'll only probably have one desktop machine doing all the heavy lifting, so I'll just need to buy one copy. The laptop will almost certainly have it pre-installed (and it will also cost substantially less than retail).
