I loved that one. The F-4 has been my favorite plane since i was a kid. I first sat in one at Wright-Patterson AFB & Museum in my early ages, so it is always nice to see.
When I get back to FLA, there is an air show that will have one flying with the USAF Heritage flights. There are some good videos for the F-4, F-15, F-14 and pretty much everything else on a website called www.flightlevel350.com
And yea, Dogfights is a great show, I really enjoyed the F-4 episode as well.
I do wonder how accurate all is though, since data collection was not feasible in WWII.

If that's the episode with Major Robin Olds it's outstanding. I think the best part of the show was going back to WWII when he was flying P-38s, that is one badass dude.

The "Death of the Japanese Navy" episode was excellant. Told the story of the Japanese trying to sortie their battleships and heavy cruisers after their carrier forces were effectively destroyed. They kind of veered off into the "Sea-Dogfights" territory telling the story of Battle off Samar and the heroism of the Taffy 3 task force.

I loved the episode on the Wildcat and MoH winner Jim Swett, who shot down seven in a single battle. The one with the Navy's Alexander Vraciu was great too and it was nice to see both men are (at the time of this writing) still alive.
I wish they could do some of the dogfights of the late, great aces like Bong, McGuire, MacCampbell, Preddy, J. Johnson, Sakai, Nishizawa, Galland, Hartmann and others.

The CGI is very cool, but the draw for me is the interviews. The CGI most definitely adds to it (and keeps the g.'s from screaming for Spongebob), but the 1st person accounts are awesome.

He asked me, what is the difference between a "machine gun" and a "cannon" on an airplane. Anyone?
To me, MG's are line-of-sight, but cannons are
over-the-horizon, or, not line-of-sight.
Why is a 0.50 caliber MG called a machinegun, but a 20 mm MG called a cannon?
Wheel-Nut
03-02-07, 11:08 PM
I don't know why the difference in terminology but the 20mm round is way bigger than the .50 cal.
http://www.fototime.com/%7B20DDB7CF-3EEA-4711-B97F-68A3DD913E6D%7D/picture.JPG
It could have something to do with how the arm is moved. Machine guns can be carried on the troop while a cannon cannot.
Why is a 0.50 caliber MG called a machinegun, but a 20 mm MG called a cannon?
I believe in WWII they were called canon if they had an explosive shell. Typically that requires a higher caliber round.
I believe in WWII they were called canon if they had an explosive shell.
 That's the way I remember it as well. I wonder if that still applies today?
I believe in WWII they were called canon if they had an explosive shell. Typically that requires a higher caliber round.
But I have shell casings and fired bullets from both 0.50 cal. rounds and 20 mm rounds. Spent, BTW. They are the same, except for size.
A cannon fires a fused round designed to explode on impact.
A machine gun fires a solid projectile designed to punch a hole in the target.
Different ways to kill your opponent.

that was fantastic to watch
only better leading up to showing how the same pilot was in command of the f4 squadron in north vietnam, tricking the n vietnamese by arming the f4's with the radar jamming that the vietnamese would associate with the f-105 thunderchiefs they were able to take down with the Mig-21's.
So they flew into the combat area, in four groups of 4, staggered about 3 minutes apart, to disguise their f4's as easy thunderchief targets. When the enemy Migs surfaced from the low cloud deck, they were in for the surprise of their lives, as the f4's engaged them, and shot down 7 of the estimated 12-16 Migs we believed for them to have posession of.

It was an enemy 'MiG' plane. Meaning it was really an A-4SU Super Skyhawk (might have been ex-Singapore planes, not totally sure) with black paint and a nondiscript red star. I remember T-38's as well so I can't remember. IIRC, it was supposed to be Iraq or Iran or some such shipoopi.
ferrarigod
03-04-07, 06:22 PM
actually, now that I think about it, the T-38's were the black planes and the one flicked off while, 'keeping up foreign relations.'
The A-4 first edition was what they trained with at Top Gun in the desert.
So yea, the 2 seater used as MiG's were the T-38s, which are really F-5 Freedom Fighters for 2 used for training. Either way, they were the enemy and still are not those pesky MiGs.

One of the airshows in portland back in 1991, I got 2nd prize in a drawing, that I won a cool 1:10 scale model of an F14 (still packed in box, somewhere)
What i wanted was the 1st prize, a ride in a Russian Sukhoi Su-27. That would have been a kick in the pants) The fighter-bomber was part of the airshow.
The guy that won, puked all over the tarmac when they landed, and went to the hospital.
Best part of airshow, was seein ex-navy jock pilot, flying for FedEx, slinging a Boeing 737 around the way it was not designed to fly cargo around.

That's one of the best things about going to the Air and Sea Show in Ft. Lauderdale in May. American Airlines is a sponsor and they always fly over and do low high speed or fake landing passes over the water.
Seeing a highspeed pass, followed by a 70 degree combination banking/climb is really sweet. Kinda throws out the idea that they can't do anything except fly people. Planes are damn powerful and more manuverable when nobodies online to complain :D

Reminds of an air show I saw at McGuire AFB as a kid. They were doing the simulated air field assault and got up to the point where they'd drop the troops in. Wind didn't permit them to drop the guys out of the C-141's, so they let the pilots put the C-141 through its paces. Low altitude high speed passes, sharp pull up, high angle turns. I imagine those paratroopers would have rather jumped.

NV, and that point Vietnam was very much in the Soviet camp and not Chinese.
I read a story about that LGB strike on that Bridge on May 10th a long time ago. They were pushing technology to the limit that day. From that point on when they aggressively bombed the north the USAF and USN was very successful.
Some Russians have started claiming that they had pilots active NV although the NV and Russia, but not many. And of course they had astronomical kill ratios.

Just watched the P-51 episode, still my favorite airplane ever. One thing I never saw before: rearview mirrors on the top (outside) of the canopy. They look like snail eyes.
Lt. Col. Bryan and Col. Candelaria pulled some absolutely impossible moves in those planes. I've seen pure stunt planes do that sort of stuff, but never a war plane in the middle of a dogfight.
Near the end of the Tuskegee Airmen episode, they brought up the fact that Germans used captured P51s, painted up in German markings, to infiltrate bomber groups. Where would they capture P51's?
Same way we stole the "interrupter" during WW1 if you remember the pilot episode.
