Does anyone know what the first icon (the warning/hazard) means? It has appeared a couple times over the last few weeks. When I mouse over it, nothing appears. When I right click it, it disappears.

Hold the cursor over it. It should give you a clue. ;)

That's the task manager buddy. :) The bright green shows CPU usage (as Ankf00 said). (My memory usage, both physical and virtual are fine.)

I'm mainly concerned if it's a warning that a piece of h/w may be failing. Like Windows detects something is up, but by the time I mouse over/right click it, it detects nothing is wrong. I back my data up, but a HD crash would still cost me a lot of time reinstalling/setting up. I was hoping someone may know when that icon appears.
That's the icon I get on my laptop when the battery is low. If I plug it in then mouse over the icon, it disappears.
on my laptop that's some sort of windows warning... usually b/c I refuse to install service pack 2 (doesn't jive with the system)

Hmmm, that's on a desktop and I have SP2. Maybe I'll run the windows update and see if I'm missing any updates.

well that only comes up for me when i have too many mozilla's open with porn. so i don't know what it is but my warning for my 1000+ seperate screens.

Have you tried the usual HijackThis and anti-spy ware scans?

I've seen both Symantec and McAfee products show an icon like that if not all of their "protection" options are turned on. I've also seen spyware that does the same. Does double-clicking it do anything?
I'd be inclined to say it's not a hardware failure, because that would mean Windows is actually giving you critical information you need to know, and, seriously, what are the odds of that? ;)

It's most likely spyware called "SpyAxe" which uses a standard Windows system tray icon to fool people.
Look in your Add/Remove Programs for SpyAxe; if it's there, google how to remove it...

I didn't think it was spyware, while I have the tools, I rarely check and haven't had spyware on this machine ever (3+ years) (if you don't include some advertising/tracking cookies). I went ahead and ran CWSShredder, Spybot S&D, HiJack This! and Ad-Aware. Nothing.

I have NAV 2005 but haven't changed any settings on it since I installed it. But, opening the NAV control panel, I do have the Internet Worm Protection off and it has a similar icon next to it.

However, as I said, it's been disabled for a long time and this started recently.
I also am not sure if I tried double clicking it. Next time, I'll double-click first.

Look in your Add/Remove Programs for SpyAxe; if it's there, google how to remove it...
Not in Add/Remove. Scans didn't find anything either.

SRSly, I think that I might get that one too, but I'm not certain. I'd have to check the other 'puter.
For me, it's because my Norton Firewall doesn't seem to recognize that I have Norton anti-virus running as well. It's a warning that I have NO AV running, abandon all hope, all is lost. Which isn't true.
What's strange is that it is a sort-of intermittant warning, sometimes it's all the time, with very pursuasive pop-ups, and sometimes it's not.

That's :cool: I have Gnome installed on one box but have never played around with it. I've been using KDE so long now, it's kind of hard to start using something else.

Do yourself a favor and DL FC6. Install on a nice machine and play with the graphic tricks it can do! Craps all over Vista... I have both installed on my laptop... Fedora is much more fun! :cool:

2) Check the event viewer (control panel-->administrative tools-->event viewer). When that window pops up double click on the 'system' tab in the left hand window pane. Scroll through the first few entries and see if you see a similar yellow triangle/exclamation point icon on any of the entries. If you do, right click on that entry and click on 'properties' and read what it has to say about that entry. It's possible you're low on disk space or something like that???

No kidding... I singlehandedly killed a project at my company (and it's no small company) that would have put Win + IIS in our externally-facing environment. I like the OS just fine, but I also like quiet evenings at home vs. chasing hackers/plugging security holes.

No TweakUI. I'll check the event viewer the next time it comes up. I'll actually look now and see if it goes back far enough. Definitely not low on disk space, have 37.6 of 74.4 GB free.

I think you are the winner.
I found an entry right before my screenshot (I'm glad I did not crop out the time). It didn't have that icon, but the Source was "Application Popup".
Here's what it says:
Application popup: Windows - Virtual Memory Minimum Too Low : Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file. During this process, memory requests for some applications may be denied. For more information, see Help.
Now, this is just stupid. I have 1 GB of RAM and my VM size is 1024 (Minimum) and 2048 (Maximum). Why does it need to warn me that my minimum is too low. Make it bigger, the maximum is 2 GB.
On a related note, isn't the rule of thumb 1.5X the amount of physical memory?

I'm just going to set min/max to 4GB. I partitioned off some space on my 2nd HD just for it, might as well just set it to the Windows maximum. I'm not putting anything else on that partition.

I've never actually seen a recommendation for winders, but in linux it is 2x the installed RAM (http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/custom-guide/ch-swapspace.html).

In addition to curing HIV/AIDS in Africa it is Gates' goal to create jobs for 10% of the global population by making sure each new release of Windows has an ever increasing number of bugs and security holes to fix and support.:\
In order to accomplish this great feat MS needs to charge more for each new version. By 2010 I have projected that the average computer will consist of $14 in hardware cost and $798 for the Windows license...:tony:

Technically, my VM wasn't low. :) It reached the minimum I set and Windows was raising it. It never hit the maximum. For some reason, Microsoft decided this was not a seamless action and needed to warn me.
