Word from Indiananoplace has it that the legendary F1 team ATS (Automobili Turismo e Sport) will be buying a stake in IRL powerhouse Cahill Racing to field a four car superteam for the 2007 season. ATS team principals include Carlo Chiti as engineer, Giotto Bizzarrini as designer, and Romolo Tavoni as team manager.

“This is an exciting progression for our company," said Tavoni, "which will allow us to take it to the next level”. Reports have Giaovanni Lavaggi and Vincenso Sospiri already signed for 2007. “It puts together all the elements we have established at Cahill Racing and continues the progress of the Vision," added Cahill, "while giving us access to the resources and talent that ATS brings. The chemistry between Carlo, Giotto, Romolo, and I is extremely good and I am looking forward to the stable long-term future.”

Biloxi mayor A.J. Holloway said he is open to the idea, but it's little more than a conceptual project at this point.

Giaovanni Lavaggi used to do the occasional one-off in CART (Long Beach?), and Vincenso Sospiri raced in Champcar for several races for Dan Gurney a few years ago. Neither one of those drivers are spring chickens.

Neither are the principals behind ATS. After all, as far as I know, they are all dead. :tony:

If Carlo Chiti was actually still alive, then it might be funny....Why not make it more legit, like saying the old RAM team principle, McDonald decided to get back into racing or something like that.......At least it hasn't been 50 years ago, just 20......

And if you had made it RAM, you could've thrown in Salad Bar for good measure... :gomer:

I got as far as legendary F1 team and ATS in the same sentence before
At least it could have been the unstable Gunter Schmidt's ATS (wheels) F1 disaster. After all he first bought Roger Penske's F1 failure to start up his very own. He didn't stop the maddness there either, to compound his mistake he bought out the failed F1 side of March at the end of 1977 and put it under his own name.
In 1981 he even had sponsorship from ABBA. :saywhat: :tony:
