I'm still waiting for the first good snowfall here. I haven't had the chance yet but usually on the first good snowfall I wait until late at night, hop in the truck and hit the sidestreets to reacquaint myself to winter driving. Then I'll wake up in the morning and wait to hear about all the bender fenders and get a good chuckle. :D Oh yeah, the driver who jumped out while the car was moving - and into the path of other cars? Darwin candidate.

I wonder how many of the crashed actually shifted into neutral or put in the clutch? :gomer:

On the topic of funny videos - I remember one from a long time ago - It was from Britain I believe, and it was a news reporter doing a spot about this road that seems to have a high number of accidents on it. And right in the middle of his report - multi-car pileup. :laugh:

There were vehicles though that did make it down the road fine.... you can see them in the background while the other cars are crashing.

Conditions were bad, but every one of those drivers were all locked up, rather than letting off the brake and trying to steer out of the slide. I've driven in conditions worse than that without incident. The chick jumping out of her car was pretty bad too. That and the guy/girl (couldn't tell from the video) that was hanging on to the passenger door trying to stop the car. :laugh:

I think my favorite though was the guy stepping between the two cars and bending over to inspect the damage. Technically not "bad driving," but a stupid thing to do nonetheless.

Interesting that the Jag, which surely had ABS, had the wheels turned full to the left and locked. Shows the limits of ABS and that folks should not overly rely on it.

As stupid as it was to jump out of the car I actually did that in a similar situation. I was driving home from work one night in a typical Jersey ice storm. Couldn't possibly drive more than 5 mph the whole way. At one point the two lane I was on has a slight downgrade and crosses a four lane highway. I stopped at the top of the grade then slowly proceeded down at less than 5 mph but the CRX would not stop or turn. Rather than roll into the highway I calmly opened the door and stepped out. At the last minute the car caught enough traction to turn into the curb and stop. I got back in and drove the rest of the way home.

It is a shame that the reporter in the second video wasn't hit by one of the cars. What kind of jackass keeps reporting instead of checking on the conditions of the two drivers, especially the one who who didn't get out of her car!!!

Snow was falling so heavily in West Seattle, one Metro bus driver told riders to "abandon bus" after the engine significantly overheated.

Seriously, some of these guys top anything in the first video. The first SUV is a real prize winner - mashing the throttle jumping the medium and starting a whole new series of crashes. One of the later cars appears to have gotten stopped only to try to get moving again and subsequently crash.

Oregon drivers are in Uber-Stupidity mode today behind the wheel.

I drove home from the store 2 hours ago, in near white out conditions, in my 2 wheel drive, 93 Ford Ranger, with studded snow tires, and passed at LEAST 20 vehicles stuck in ditch on the side of the road. I had no traction problems AT all, even going up 2 hills with at least a 5% grade. (I am in Southern Oregon - Grants Pass)

Something is wrong with driver's education in this country when 40% of my claims at work today were people that I've had claims with in the past two months, and they are all under 21. We're the #6 auto insurer in Ohio too, so its not like the odds were likely that I'd hear from them again either...

I have seen enough cars with bald/summer tires sliding sideways, spinning totally out of control while my Subaru (with real snow tires in good condition all the way around) has more than adequate traction. I have also seen many Subarus with bald/summer tires just as bad off. Just like racing slicks in the rain, the safety team pickup trucks don't have any traction problems.

40% repeat accidents over a two month span is a bit much, I agree. However, getting back to the winter driving thing, how many places actually specialize in a winter driving course?

My only accident was when I was 16, and I haven't even been close to having an accident since I started autocrossing.

If autocross-style car control lessons were mandatory for licensed drivers, we'd have alot less accidents in this country. And I'd probably be out of a job. :eek:

I didn't say that you specifically had any accidents. I'm just pointing out the age thing.

The autocross-style lessons could be a good idea, but resistance would come from more traditional driving schools, who would feel that their business was being taken away.

In the last month I've seen 1 WRX in the ditch and one do a 360 in the middle of the Edens expressway. :thumbup:

I doubt 'car control' is the issue in most accidents. How about paying attention to the signs, lights and road markings? How about hanging up the phone and paying attention? How about not tailgating at 75 MPH? :mad: Buncha fracking idiots we share the road with. :shakehead

Had some ice on the way in this morning but not too bad if you were paying attention. Saw the results of one wreck, 4WD SUV :laugh: . The way he/she had bounced off the concrete retaining walls on both sides of the road it was obvious the idiot was driving too fast for the conditions.

Dallas is iced/snowed over, everyone going 30 in the left lane :mad: the ionosphere level overpasses and interchanges mostly heavily sanded, if not, it was fun going.


on the next street from mine I'm going slow, ease on to the brakes, whoosh right through a stop sign :gomer:, after that it was smooth going, was able to control any slipping and sliding, not bad for never driving on this stuff and having the crappiest goodyears known to man.

Well, to be fair, around here those snow tires would come in handy for about an hour or so every other year, so I wouldn't fault anybody for not shelling out the $$ for them. Save the hate.

All the training and certifications in the world won't stop people from having their priorities out of order and trying to beat the odds.

I fly a lot, but my wife does not. On Honeymoon she asked me about ever sound. We were flying a leg from San Juan to Miami and miles from the airport I could literally see the windshear in the thunderstorm from my seat and I started to mumble to myself not to fly into it while also trying not to upset her.

Sure enough we hit it, instantly lost about 1000 ft as the pilot hit the power. We continued to fall until we finally got clear of it with less than 500 feet to spare and he pulled around for another approach.

The fact that we he and I both almost died was the only thing that kept me from giving anything more than a dirty look to the pilot on the way off the plane.
