I recently purchased a Toshiba Satellite laptop with an S-video output. I am trying to hook it up to a TV via the S-video input on the TV so that I can watch DVDs through the TV. I hooked it up with an S-video cable and got nothin'. I tried a DVD player from another room and it worked fine, so I know the problem is not with the TV or a bad cable. It has to be something with the Toshiba. I don't know if there is a setting I am supposed to change or what. Any help is appreciated.

You usually have to enable the laptop to output to that. Usually, it's under the Settings tab within the Display Properties. You can bring this up by right-clicking on your desktop and choosing 'Properties'.

Looking at one of their online manuals, pressing Fn and F5 together will cycle through the various internal/external display options. Default is probably the internal display only.

I had trouble hooking my PC to my computer. Try turning the resolution on your computer to the lowest setting. That should at least get a picture on your tv. Then go back & bump the resolution up till it looks good. Chances are that your computer is sending too high a quality signal to your TV.

Related, and not at ALL a hijax:

How do you go from the std PC output DB15 (or whatever it's called) to component video out? Anyone got a pin assignment so I can separate the colors? I can do my own cables, but I need pin assignments.

Or can it not be done??

My new HD set doesn't have a PC hookup. But it is so sweet...

Google Transcoder.

I had to get one to go the reverse direction. Component to VGA. My TV has one set of component and one VGA input. Satellite and DVD are both component. The one I bought will handle the 480P from a DVD player.

Here (http://www.digitalconnection.com/Products/Video/9a60.asp) is one from the brand I bought.

Ah, crap. I'm going to have to think about this then, aren't I?

Since the puter for downstairs is a bottom of the barrel POS ($99.00 HP Black Friday special), I was planning on upgrading the video card anyways. Maybe there's a new card that will solve all my problems...

I am such a n00b at 'puter stuff. Last time I opened a computer case, it was to add memory to bring it up to 256 Mb. On a Mac.:shakehead

Thanks!

Find a cheap ATI all in wonder card. I've been using them for probably a decade now and I don't think I could go back.

Late to the party, but it took me a while too... I have a new Toshiba Tecra Lappy & I love it, but it took me ages to plug in to the TV...

Sorry G - it's been a long week, otherwise I would have gotten to this sooner. If you're still looking for them, here (http://www.dataip.co.uk/Reference/SVGAPinOut.php) are the pin assignments for 15-pin SVGA monitor connectors. As to whether it can be done or not, it seems like it should be possible, but I have no first-hand knowledge. If I get a chance I'll look around a bit for you.
