View Full Version : F-22 Raptor Tripped Up by the...International Date Line...

It destroys anything else out there, but the international date line is now 6-0 against the F-22 Raptor.
...on a 12 to 15 hours flight from Hawaii to Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan. The U.S. Air Force's mighty Raptor was felled by the International Date Line (IDL).
When the group of Raptors crossed over the IDL, all of their computer systems crashed. Everything from fuel subsystems, to navigation and partial communications were completely taken offline. Numerous attempts were made to "reboot" the systems to no avail.

I'd be surprised if the majority, if not all, of the software is written in anything besides Ada.
Saw this reported over the weekend on CNN. They are really lucky the avionics wasn't effected. At least they were able to fix it quickly.
My first thought seeing the report was the Microsoft BSOD. :laugh:
Do they knows about DST on Mar.11? Blue screen of Death part II.
I hear the next F-22 model will be a two seater: Pilot up front, IT guy in back.

I'd send out the hounds, but they won't be happy. That boy doesn't have enough meat on him for a mid-morning snack....
Could be retired at 7,500 posts? If so, that's weak, should've gone for 10,000.
Or... he could be in the midst of his Colorado move, or some other super-secret maneuver.
Let's see what DM's hounds come up with? Sag Ankeer? Ank Vindaloo? Chanka Masala?

Pretty funny read, but I thought the most destructive glitch was the infamous Mars orbiter that crashed and burned because one engineering team used metric units and another used imperial for related calculations.

Maybe in space, but here on Earth, the Therac 25 is the worst one I can think of (5 or 6 people died as a result).

Good article about the Raptor's unfair advantage (http://www.acc.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123041831) at Red Flag.
"I can't see the [expletive deleted] thing," said RAAF Squadron Leader Stephen Chappell, exchange F-15 pilot in the 65th Aggressor Squadron. "It won't let me put a weapons system on it, even when I can see it visually through the canopy. [Flying against the F-22] annoys the hell out of me."
BTW, when I wrote avionics above I meant to say flight controls. They did loose all their avionics systems.

The USA has flown 10 Low Observable aircraft now and not one other nation has yet.
I love how Russian Fanboys say they will have an operation Stealth fighter with AESA by 2010-12.
The F-22 first flew in 1992 and is just now deploying. The Russians have not demonstrated any stealth yet. Or they could try and copy it and call it the Raporski

Don't Forget the F-22 and F-35 had competitors in the YF-23 and the Boeing X-32
Also the two Technology Demonstrators Tacit Blue and Have Blue.
You could argue for the YB-49 too.
edit: Don't Forget Bird of Prey, it never got much attention like tacit blue and have blue.

It DID exist...Revell made models of it!!! :rofl:

Just for grins, any theories about what actually happened?
I'm assuming the navigation uses GPS to position the plane and flight path in time and space relative to GMT but someone forgot to account for what happens when today becomes yesterday.
That would shut down everything including communications?
Wow.
A little info from the first post in this (http://uplink.space.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=missions&Number=672539&page=1&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=0&fpart=all) thread at uplink.

No idea what most of the acronyms mean.
IMIS = Integrated Maintenance Information System
OFP = Operational Flight Plan
AEF = Aerospace Engineering Facility
FW = Fixed Wing?
Hickam = Air Force Base at Honolulu Int'l Airport

If the VP is such a VIP, shouldn't we keep the PC on the QT, because if it leaks to the VC, he could end up MIA and then we'll all be put on KP.
