I'm just happy that 'Champcarfantasies' is really gaining momentum.
Back to the matter at hand. Kevin and Jerry will stop spending if they don't see a return. That's how self made rich dudes work. Tony will spend forever because racing is his business and he can keep this loser afloat with his other revenue streams. The way it looks now the CCWS will not be a money maker anytime soon (or ever with the current plan) as the public continues to be completely disinterested, Kevin and Jer-Bear bag it and Tony "wins". The IRL however will never be what CART was and the 500 will never return to what it was. Sportscar racing will continue to be a cyclical mess of ego's. Maybe Andy Evans will even make a return. And Nascar will fall off but remain a mainstream league battling the NBA for the eyes of suburban crackers who are scared of inner city black dudes who make a bungload of dough. Life will go on, Road America will still have major events and Siebken's will serve Jager shots in plastic cups. And maybe the dorks on fantasy island will flock to LaCrosse or Polo or something else no one cares about.

That's the nice thing about a niche business. You know it won't grow quickly, so you don't need to invest much and a single good deal, like with Crique, can produce a very nice return.

... more than he needs us, and even though he said it tongue-in-cheek, he's right.
I'm optimistic, but I understand why a lot of people feel like we haven't given them a reason to be. I'm not going to take anybody to task for a wait-and-see attitude ... you probably shouldn't be either. The people that have been watching this sport for a few decades and have a few concerns about the viability of the series have earned the right to that approach.

The school for which I work is a self-admitted niche organization. It's nice to know that, if our quality of education drops to the point that kids aren't being properly prepared for college, we can just tell the parents we're a niche school, you knew that before you gave us the $15k/year, and you need to get over it. Joe's Construction just bought the naming rights to our field hockey scoreboard, and we're happy to gain Joe's and lose you.
The Indianapolis 500, formerly The Greatest Spectacle in Racing, is a niche product, folks. NICHE. It hasn't been run into the ground by incompetant management, it was always just niche. It will never go away, there will always be the few thousand loyal gomers who will remain committed. Indy may lose fans but she'll gain more. Indy's gained a whole negative 20 million or so to date. Yep, Indy is niche.

this is the sport that spawned the Indy ****ing 500 and you're comparing it to the CFL and WWF? this is the sport that used to bring in regular 4 ratings with mobs of viewers from 5 continents and now celebrates going from a .1 to a .2 or .3 and that's "passion from enough fans?"
Just want to point out the WWE is doing a lot better than the IRL and CC. :) CC should aspire to be as "niche" as the WWE.

From the sounds of things "someday" may be just around the corner. And at this point, I saw screw it. Throw it out there and let's see if it floats. If the future means the continued revolving door of paying drivers, dumping US road courses for US street circuits that will themselves be dumped for Euro races because some stoned Dutchmen think Jos r0x0rz my s0x0rz, 2-month schedule gaps, burned bridges with the few corporate sponsors who still give the series the time of day, and series management that talks a big game on the internets but hasn't yet delivered in reality, then I'd rather the damn thing sinks now, before the idea of combining CC & Atlantic fields isn't just flamebait.
I hope I'm wrong and that enough stuff will be announced at Laguna to form a solid base on which to finally start building. But I'm not holding my breath.
We'll see what happens in a couple years. They will have tried to do everything they can think of to get CC successful by then. Then they will decide if this is just fun and games for the rich, or it's over. It would be quite a shame. Unless big changes were to come to the IRL, I'll only be watching F1.

Ah, fan membership qualifications. How very CCF of you.
I'd have my plan set for my usual two races this year (used to be five) if I knew for sure they weren't going to be pulled from the schedule. I'm waiting until a few weeks before each race to make my decision. At least I know there will still be tickets/hotel/camp sites available.
Does that make this 20+ year fan of Champ Car less of a fan?

Beer and juice marketer Frank D’Angelo has reached a five-year deal for the naming rights to the Champ Car race. The partnership with Steelback Breweries is to be announced next Tuesday.
D’Angelo is best known for his non-traditional approach to advertising in which he puts himself front and centre as executive pitchman.
Steelback’s sponsorship fills a void left by Molson Coors Brewing, which left the auto race in the fall to focus on hockey and music, sponsorship opportunities it says are more closely aligned with the people who drink its brands.
But Grand Prix spokesperson Shannon Davidson said the new sponsor is paying at least as much as Molson did last year. She said there were negotiations with several potential sponsors.
“There were definitely a few at the table, there’s no question about that,” she said. “But this particular partner was very forthright and moved fairly quickly and showed great interest in leveraging the partnership.”
Molson is believed to have paid more than $2 million one year to headline the race, but in today’s softer sponsorship market, the price is believed to be closer to $500,000 a year.
The returns can be lucrative for a beer company since pouring rights at the race can reach as much as $7 a beer during the Grand Prix weekend, and the sole supplier sells tens of thousands of cups over a three-day event.

Emerging from bankruptcy? This is year 4. Almost all of the race contracts are up, KK and GF bought up Cosworth. There's a new chassis. What is the same from when they bought those assets? What is better from the 2002 or 2003 season today? Please give actual examples.

That one got burried... didn't see that story. Official announcement is this week per the article on canoe.
It's good that at least this race has a title sponsor. It's a strong event, always has been. $500k seems like a steal, it gets enough coverage just here in Toronto to justify more than that.
The pessimist side of this, of course, is Molson going from promoting races to not even being able to find $500K to put their name on it... but let's just ignore that for now. :p

I sorta recall being around during the court proceedings - and getting myself involved in it to a small degree. Hell, I still owe Spickkly a drink or two because of the personal crap he had to endure because of what I did.
Hey, you can deal with it all you want. But try to find sponsorship for a team, and ask around for some company to give you 2 million annually and then call it a niche sport and see how far you get.
I agree it'll never be back to the way it was (damnit). But the major problem still is that it still costs way too much to run a car. The team owners have a hard time dealing with that - else you'd see 30+ car grids.
You and I can deal with it, we just watch the races either in person or on TV. The team owners are showing us they can't or don't want to deal with it. And that's what us old farts have a problem with.
