On the positive side, I have to give a shout out to "my Padres" for creaming the Giants on openng day. Listening to Ted Leitner chortling as he announced the game was a real treat. With any luck, Maddox has settled down Peavy and there should be some goooooooooood pitching. Trevor already has his first save from game #2.
On the other side of the local coin, Shouse was nearly perfect in squashing those Dodgers on opening day. Couldn't happen to a nicer group.

I'd imagine its a little easier to play a baseball game with everyone wearing the same number than it is to do football with everyone as #42.
You are right, but the NFL is filled with examples of them not letting players honor anything. They fined Jake Plummer for having a "42" decal on his helmet to honor Pat Tillman. They wouldn't let Peyton Manning wear black hightops to honor Johnny Unitas. They wouldn't let some players wear a 27 jersey to honor Darrent Williams at the Pro Bowl where players wear their number and the same number is on multiple players.
I am freaking pissed.
1 strike away from a win and these stupid umps argue with Hargrove long enough til we get another white out.
Then after an hour and a half delay, they call the game and reschedule it as a double header tomorrow.

first, unlike your stros, the indians have actually won a game this year.
second, i told ogorman a ticket would likely be available because the women wouldn't want to go due to the snow. they still wanted to go, which eliminated the extra ticket. it was 20 degrees and snowy, I think it would have been pretty easy to buy one on the street for 10 bucks.

Stu,

It was all in-game commentary. The Brass Knuckles talk was from a spring training game in 2006, and the fighting in the stands comment was just from a random game in Chi-town in 2005 when Hammy saw a huge fight in the stands. I think Hamilton was even laughing because the fight was between 2 Sox fans, not with a Tribe fan.

People here didn't care when Trenton shifted from Detroit to Boston, but when it switched to the Yanks it was a big deal because you get to see Yanks in rehab starts as well as the up and coming prospects.
But Columbus was aligned with the Yanks for as long as I could remember.

The Clippers were the Yankees affiliate since ~1980. I think the shock over the Yankees moving to Scranton was lessened when it became apparent that either the Tribe or the Reds would likely relocate their AAA team to Cbus. My $$$ is on the Tribe moving here from Buffalo. The Nats are only signed for 2 seasons, so someone else will be here when the new ballpark opens in 2009 (assuming they local gov gets off its @ss and gets the park site cleaned up and the ballpark design approved). :saywhat: $10 the Yankees end up in Buffalo if the Tribe moves the Bisons here? It was a good run with the Yankees, but I think it was time for a change.

I think not. The Yanks have expressly said they want to keep their farm teams closer to NY because it makes it easier logisitically to move players around, do rehab starts and for the ML coaches to assess farm talent. They also realize that having local farm team will not draw fans away from the big team. Rather it helps to build more regional interest. That's how they explained the move from Cbus anyway.
You'd better hope the Boss is willing to break out that checkbook when The Rocket comes knocking in a few weeks.
When has that ever been an issue? If anything he is too quick with the pen and frankly he may be with the Rocket. His competitiveness makes the other pitcher better, but he's not really good for more than 4-5 inning anymore, he is old, not getting old, and this "I'll walk in when I feel like it, but I don't care to spend the full season crap" is bad for the clubhouse. Let him bring that poison to the idiots up in Boston.

Yeah, but they've only signed a 2-year deal with Scranton, but Scranton is closer to NYC than Buffalo.

that's a crock, he averaged 6 IP/outing last season with a 2.30 ERA and about 1 K/Inning. and he's the consummate teammate on top of that even if he does skip the road trips he's not pitching in.
but, hopefully he does ignore the overtures from the carpetbaggers, so keep on thinking he's only good for 4 IP/outing :p

I mistyped. I meant to say he makes the entire pitching staff better because of the example he sets. If he averaged six innings last year I'm surprised because he was barely doing that a few years ago with the Yanks.
I just don't want the circus around him to float into the Bronx this summer. The team is a long way from the solid cast of characters on the team in 96-00. Its better than it was a few years ago but there is still too much influence from the bozos in Tampa and I'm afraid it will get worse if the pitchers keep going down. Hughes is the latest. Out six weeks with a hamstring he pulled in the sixth inning of a no hitter last night.:shakehead

The good, the bad and the ugly, well maybe not in that order.
The display yesterday at the game was ridiculous. Too bad most of you couldn't hear the local TV and radio coverage. Wetting themselves doesn't begin to cover it. Suzyn Waldman, one of the radio voices, was screaming and I swear had multiple, multiple orgasms.
The Yankees are about drama, but this just seemed so desparate, contrived and orchestrated. I could see it if it was Bernie Williams coming back, but "welcoming home" Roger Clemens? He was a Yankee for only four years and was known for stinking it up in big games. Was he running away from home these last three years after the Yankees gave him an Orange Hummer to retire to Texas with?
Highest salary in baseball? Higher than even A-Rod? Please, he won't even be the best pitcher on the staff. As is too often the case the Yanks were bidding against themselves. Houston wasn't going to give him anything and he sure as heck wasn't going back to Boston given how bad he pitched under that pressure the last many times he was there.
The special treatment? Where is the "team" of equals from the late 90s. I'm sure Giambi is happy to carry Rockets bags so long as he pitches every fifth day (and so long as he can next ask someone to carry his). This is crap and very much un-Yankee of putting the team and it history and professionalism first.
His numbers in Houston were impressive but he only pitched into the 7th a handful of times and averaged less than six. His ERA was very low but add at least a run when it translates to the American League and the bottom third of the order is almost as strong as the top. His ERA was in the 4s during his time with the Yanks. If he is just a solid starter that can give you 5 innings then he is just a capable 4th starter that doesn't help the pen very much.
But why does it make sense? They need pitching and this commits them to only a one year deal, something they aren't likely to get with another prospect. They don't have to trade or give up any of their very good prospects. Better yet, they can put them back on their proper development plan and better yet they get to learn something about competitiveness, preparation and toughness from Clemens.
And perhaps more than anything else, and its what George lives for, it stirs up the Yankee haters and puts the Yanks on the back page of the tabloids and non-stop on the sport-talk stations. It tells the Yankee loyal that they will do whatever it takes to stay on top even if it is sometimes crazy.
BTW, the Star Ledger estimates he will be paid just under $8000 a pitch. I wonder what Trevor will pay me to play catch with him.:)
It's mind boggling to think that the NYY have > $50mm tied up in two players. :saywhat: How many teams don't have payrolls > $50mm? I'll bet it's @ least half. :\
