Bumgarner competes in Formula Atlantic


FOLLOWING her impressive debut in the Asian Formula 3 last year, three-time Asian Karting champion Reigning Asian Karting Queen Michele Bumgarner is keen on moving on to full-time single-seat formula racing this season.

The 17-year-old Bumgarner aims to invade the Formula Atlantic scene through the 1st Accelerate Annual Driver Shoot-out set February 25 to March 4 in Phoenix, Arizona.

Accelerate is an entry level professional training series program intended to groom minority talents for the Champ Car Atlantic and World Series. The program is a brainchild of Gale Slayers (former NFL running back for Chicago Bears) and Ray Lewis (NFL Pro Linebacker for Baltimore Ravens), the primary owners of S&L Racing—the first minority-owned and driven team in the Champ Car World Series history.

S&L Racing is being assisted by world renown Newman Wach Racing and has tapped partnerships with Karting Leagues and the Bob Bondurant Racing School to ensure the top level racing competence of minority drivers and crew talents.

After the training, Bumgar-ner will be considered to drive a Champ Car Champ Car Atlantic and World Series.

I guess I'll believe it when I see it, but there have been former NFL players who had stakes in CC teams....

Sounds like they're trying to lay some groundwork for next year. That Bumgarner article (or another one) says that she'll hopefully make the Atlantic field next year.

So assume they hang out with Newman Wachs, learn the ropes, build a 1 car CC team for next year with a couple Atlantic cars. Sounds like they want to scout their own talent instead of hiring some of the regular names that crop up. Again, good dream, believe it when I see it.

The Newman-Wachs thing seems to indicate it's an Atlantics thing. Also, given who the drivers are, they seem like they'd be in way over their heads.
