We've had some discussions on this before, and I'm looking into starting to build a cabinet and convert it into a nice MAME machine.

There was a discussion at another forum I frequent about it, and someone linked a good page on what not to do. :D

CLEAR THE RUNWAY. PAC-MATT IS TAKING THE F*** OFF!!

It's like a friggin' albatross. Maybe it should be called the "Pac-Spruce-Goose" or something. It may not be wider than it is tall, but it's pretty god damn close.

So why is it so wide? So there can be a trackball 17 yards off to the right, of course. Trackball games are definately best played from the far, far, right. Stading in the middle where you can see would just be too convenient.

One of them had a joystick just behind the trackball. That'll leave a mark playing Golden Tee. :gomer:

I have a buddy who buily one of these, so I sent him the link with a note that there was a gallery of his work on the innerweb. :D

Help me out, "MAME"?

DM, the site has certainly a fine collection of wasted trips to Home Depot and lost weekends, but the guy is so angry about it. He's morally offended to the point I'd worry about him and pointy objects. What's the obsession with finding and condemming these fine examples of red neck nerd decor?:\

Seek, and you shall find....Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. Basically it allows you to play hundreds, if not thousands, of game on a single machine using an old PC box.

Ok, then why not just use an old PC box? Sorry, I'm stupid but is this just an excuse to use up some waste particle board to add a little mall arcade ambiance to the family room?

Yeah, the idea is to have an arcade experience with real controls and such. For example, playing Golden Tee on a PC pretty much sucks, as you don't use anything close to the trackball on the real arcade/bar version of the game. MAME allows a near arcade experience for a fraction of the cost of an original arcade game, and you can play a ton of games rather than just one or two. Plus, there's the Tim Allen factor of building something. Uh, uh, uh.... :)

All these mame boxes are older PCs......

PCs just put into a big cabinet, but with real arcade controllers..

I'm an arcade nut, what can i say. :gomer: I love playing the old arcade games - the real ones, not the cheezy ported for the pc games. MAME allows me to play all those original arcade games I loved growing up. If I had it years ago, think of how many rolls of quarters I coulda saved.

I have mame on my system and probably round 200 or so games. Playing them on the keyboard just isn't the same. And for a little bit of cash and a couple weekends of work, you can build yourself an arcade machine that can play as many or as little games as you want - for less than it would cost to buy a solitary game.

At the other forum someone linked this one. It has a nice clean look to it...

I found the byoac website that all those previous were found at. I found a couple I really like and some i'm just amazed at the work that went into it....

I really like the look of this one. The logo on the screen, sides and control panel is this guy's avatar. Only complaint is that the trackball might be a little too close to the bezel for golden tee.

DM: I now get it. Enjoy.

Some of my Northeast Jersey friends would particularly like the examples involving marble.:D
