Skier Bode Miller told the Associated Press he wouldn't compete in another Winter Olympics because, "There's too much emphasis on winning."
Miller prefers to concentrate on other career options, such as partying with his friends, where there's never too much emphasis on sinning.

to coin an (i believe) appropriate olympic - themed quote from Mike Richter:
...Much as the IOC should discourage drug use, it can not pretend that marijuana affords athletes a competitive edge.
''That's performance enhancing?'' said Mike Richter, goaltender for the American hockey team. ''I would think it would make you want to sit on your butt and eat doughnuts.''
Thank you Mr. Miller.
I believe most Americans would rather you not compete in another Olympics.

Yeah. All this hype on him and then he chokes. Or maybe he really didn't care to begin with.

I think it's safe to say most of us only care about most Olympic sports during the Olympics. I think it's also safe to say Bode will be most remembered for his 'performance' at the last Olympics.

It's sad, but true. Swimming and track-and-field events are among the most popular sports to watch at the Olympics, but not a whole lot of people give a **** after the Olympics.

There was some of that going on at the race today.

Slalom, G Slalom, Super G, and Downhill are to me the most intense Olympic sports there are.
I used to ski Slalom when in High School on Ski Team and NASTAR, when Bill Johnson, the Mahre brothers, Alberto Tomba, and Peter Muller were my hero's in Skiing.
To see a guy like Bode, with natural ability, act so arrogant and then not put up, is shameful.

I never said I don't admire him. There's no way my *** could be out there doing the stuff he does. Or even ski in general for that matter. I watched him compete in the Olympics and thought holy crap, can he do some stuff with skis! I admire him for what he does and what he has accomplished.
Now I'm starting to wonder I got myself into this thread/conversation... Maybe because I never get into any of this kind of stuff.

Downhill skiing and ski jumping on my fave Olympic sports. I grew up in the days when no one on the US Olympic team could take any donations whatsoever or it would jeopardize their "amateur" status. If they lost a glove, it was a tragedy unless they themselves had enough money to replace it. No one could give them the money to buy one. My dad used to employ several of the guys during the summer at inflated wages so they would have enough dough to ski in the winter. I spent many a winter day standing at the base of a ski jump.
At some level I get where this guy is coming from. There IS too much emphasis on winning. The problem is that the other side of the coin is excelling and doing your best for the glory of the SPORT. He doesn't do that either. He was given a huge amount of talent. He knows it and couldn't stand the responsibility to excel so he bailed on the whole idea. A real waste of talent. Too bad.

you have heard of the FIS World Cup, yes? The first american to win the overall WC title encompassing all disciplines in how long?
according to the definitions here, Terje Haakonsen is an even bigger choad than Bode because he refused to participate in the olympics to begin with. :gomer:

I had forgotten about that. I don't think it's the same thing. To go and not to give 100%, that's where I see the problem.
I definitely have mixed feelings about Brodie. I just think it's a shame he is not developing his talent to its fullest. Obviously he feels differently.

Unless you are a skier, one who actually takes it "Seriously", then you'll never get what skiing is. As the late great Doug Combs once said:
"What sport can you stand up, and in 5 seconds be going 60 miles an hour with no motor, no wings, no nothing but some sticks harnessed to you legs, and have the freedom to go and do anything you want on that mountain."
Skiing is hard. You can never ever perfect it. That is the beauty of it. Every day and every run is different. No winners. You just do it. Bumps. Groomers. Pow. Steeps. Jumps. Gates. Trees.
the only losers in skiing are those that make excuses for not getting after it.

you have heard of the FIS World Cup, yes? Winning the World Cup is like winning the F1 WDC without car performance being a factor. Nine US national titles isn't bad either. Compared to that the Olympics is an overblown media circus in the mold of the Indy 500. Bode may not be very articulate or media savvy but it's clear his nose detects an odor he doesn't care for.
IMO the Olympics is a cash box sideshow run by a bunch of corrupt creeps on par with Tony George and like TG all they care about is their one event. All the noise about lofty spirit and higher goals is cynical happy talk for the rubes. Big money, power and influence is what it's about. No money for the athletes of course, just a feeding frenzy for everyone else from top to bottom...
The influence peddling scandals after Salt Lake and Sydney are par for the course because the structure itself is corrupt. IOC members are representatives of the IOC in their respective countries, not their country's delegate within the IOC. In other words, the IOC directors from the US are not our representative but exist rather to hand down edicts as decided by the IOC. There is zero transparency. We don't vote on them, appoint them nor can we remove them.
Governments come and go but the IOC are like cardinals in the Vatican and exist in a world all their own immune to outside scrutiny. President for life Juan Antonio Samaranch was a fascist and a crony of the repressive Spanish dictator Franco. Past and current IOC members include ex-government sports ministers, retired military generals, a former defense minister in Ugandan dictator Idi Amin's regime, an ex-head of the South Korean CIA and a former member of the Stasi secret police. :yuck:

This isn't about skiing, it is about a arrogant spoiled brat of an athelete who happily takes all kinds of money and fully buys into the olympic pr machine who gets all upset when people call him on being a total screw up. He bought 100% into the hype and he did not live up to the hype he gladly helped build and now it is everyone's fault but his own. Screw him.
Michael Andretti and Bobby Rahal won a hell of a lot of races too, just further proof that you can be very fast and be a cretin at the same time.

Amen. He cashed the checks, but didn't live up to the hype. I have the utmost respect for skiers, but I have zero respect for any athlete that makes themselves bigger than the sport.

when he won a Silver in Salt Lake no one GAF beyond "hey, an american medal, cool."
y'all bought into the hype, he laughed at it from the beginning, and thus you guys are pissy. the trick's on you though, he still competes on the WC circuit, still trains, still goes after wins, he's not phased by 1 extra media whore olympics at the twilight of his career, he already has his skins on his wall as Oddlycalm mentioned.
to parallel, All-American Superhero Lance Armstrong? One of the biggest pricks you'll ever come across. Y'all wouldn't know this though through media coverage, but he is. But it's an individual sport, the best have to be arrogant SOB's. They work their asses off all their lives to win individual awards, not some "team country" concept.
The Olympics seem much less interesting these days. Professional athletes, paid to prop up a system of nationalistic politics that exists to promote itself and its members. So called fans, who spend a fortune to hobnob with each other, wear the latest Global Trash fashions and pretend to care for national pride. Bleh.
I am with Bode on this one. He has no duty to anyone else, and he is free to define his goals as he chooses.
forgot to mention, '06/'07 FIS World Cup Super-G Champion on top of that 9th US title...

Whether it's musicians, race drivers, downhill skiers, etc. the extremely gifted often don't amount to much outside their chosen pursuit. Enjoy the performance and be glad you don't have to talk to them much less live around them.

Austrian skier Matthias Lanzinger's lower leg amputated after crash
5 hours ago
OSLO, Norway — Austrian skier Matthias Lanzinger's lower left leg was amputated Tuesday because of complications from two broken bones in a crash at a World Cup race.
Lanzinger broke his shin and fibula Sunday during a super-G. The double fracture severely damaged blood vessels, hampering circulation in the 27-year-old skier's leg.
The Austrian ski federation said the surgery Monday night was only partly successful and left doctors no other option in an effort to avoid further risks.
"The circulation could not be stabilized," said doctor Thomas Hoelzenbein, who was flown in from Austria Monday to lead the operation.
Organizers of the race in Kvitfjell, Norway, were criticized because no medical helicopter was available. Lanzinger was flown to a hospital in Lillehammer in a tourist helicopter, and later was brought to Oslo.
"The lacking safety measures at these races are shocking," Austrian Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer told the Austria Presse Agency on Tuesday. "I can't understand how a World Cup race could be organized at such a low safety level."
Ugh. Too bad :( (http://canadianpress.google.com/article/ALeqM5hObY7rn7he3tVYQUm4daNovnhTPw)

Miller assured World Cup title as Cuche won't run slalom

BORMIO, Italy -- Bode Miller was assured of his second overall World Cup title in four years after his closest challenger decided not to ski one of the season's final two races.
Didier Cuche was not going to compete in the season's final slalom, Swiss team spokeswoman Kristina Schneider said Thursday. Cuche, a speed specialist who won the downhill season title over Miller earlier this week, doesn't race the slalom.
Miller declined to speak to reporters at the finish line.
"I am not talking today," he said.
His personal coach, John McBride, was glad the title came before the final race. Miller split from the U.S. team this season to train on his own.
"I am very happy I don't have to drag this all the way to the slalom and chew my fingers off watching him try to bring home the bacon in the slalom," McBride told The Associated Press. "I'm super relieved that he's done it because I think he proved he was the best overall skier this year."
Miller, who also won the overall in 2005, set up the United States to sweep the men's and women's overall World Cup titles for the first time in 25 years.
Now all Lindsey Vonn has to do is make sure she keeps some of her 157-point lead over Maria Riesch of Germany and Americans will take both championships for the first time since Phil Mahre and Tamara McKinney won in 1983.
Hannes Reichelt of Austria won the final Super-G race of the season to clinch the World Cup title in the discipline by one point over Cuche, who won the downhill season crown.
Miller missed his last chance at the downhill title when bad weather prevented the season's last race from being run Wednesday, allowing Cuche to keep his lead.
On Thursday, Reichelt won the Super-G by the slimmest margin, beating Didier Defago of Switzerland by 0.01 seconds, giving him 341 points in seven Super-G races this season. Cuche finished 16th, one spot out of the points.
Cuche said he tried to ski a safe run to finish in the points to secure the super-G title.
"I wanted to use tactics," the 33-year-old said. "If I had only come in 15th, you could have said that I was clever. Now I'm the idiot."
Miller had a safe run to clock 1:46.01, extending his lead with a 12th-place finish.

Skiing is an individual sport and by nature is selfish. The Olympics have become a sham over the past two decades. Its not longer a coming together of amateur athletes around the world to have fun and represent their country. Its commercialized and dramatized to death by the media. That is why Bode has given up on the Olympics. The media could care less that he was injured most of the year and was less than 100% going into the Olympics. Did he use that as a crutch? No, he said he skied the best he could, but it wasn't enough. Now back healthy again, he's shown that he is the best in the world.
The American public and media only care about skiing once every 4 years. Bode and any other skier knows this. Which is why he turned is back on the media and Team USA. Good for him, and congrats! I love seeing a kid who grew up skiing New England Powder on top of the world.
