.50-caliber revolverThis isn't a 38 police special. This is a gun designed specifically for hunting big game, especially in tight quarters. My bro-in-law hunts deer with a .50-cal revolver because where he lives he isn't allowed to use a high-powered rifle.

A man whose face was severely mauled by a grizzly in Yellowstone National Park is a photographer and author of books about grizzlies who also had been attacked in 1993.
The National Park Service said Jim Cole, 57, was hiking alone, off- trail in prime grizzly habitat Wednesday when he was attacked by a sow with a cub. He apparently was carrying pepper spray but whether he used it was unclear.

IMO, when it comes to hunting in North America, hog hunting and bear hunting are pretty much neck & neck when it comes to excitement. Both are tough and wily, and both will completely f### up your day if you make a mistake or get too close.
As for weapons, when I was still hunting, my favorite was an AMT .45 Automag. But I've hunted deer and hogs with everything from the .45 Automag to a .44 Magnum... to a .308 Encore (that nearly broke my wrist the first time I fired it). But no matter how exotic your weapon or your ammo, taking down even a 300 or 400 pound hog is something of an accomplishment. I saw a hunting companion's 12 gauge magnum slugs do nothing more than knock the dust off of a hog's chest. What many people don't understand is these feral hogs develop what is essentially chest armor around their vitals. So you're hunting something that has a natural bullet proof vest. And like most creatures, once wounded and cornered, their instinct is to charge the attacker and eliminate the threat. Their techinque is one of going for the ankle/lower leg area and slashing with their tusks as they go by. Once they've crippled the mark, then they come back and talk to you about dinner: hogs are omnivores, ya know. ;)
So what this kid did was amazing, IMO. If you're not a hunter, take a pass and go to another thread. But any one-eyed p#$$y can take a sniper shot from a tree stand at 100 yards with a scoped .270 or 30.06. Until you get out past 50-100 yards, you should be able to prove your worth with a pistol, bow & arrow or muzzle/breach loaded black powder rifle.
Get down on the ground, crawl on your gut and get up close & personal with what you want to kill... or what might kill you.

Since it took 8 shots from a .50 cal. to kill the thing the precaution of having guides and his father with high powered rifles seems wise. :eek:
Doesn't say but if it's a .50 cal revolver there aren't all that many choice I'm aware of... .500 S&W magnum?

State wildlife officials said Wednesday they want to know how the huge hog dubbed "Monster Pig" got into a fenced hunting preserve where it was chased down and shot to death by an 11-year-old boy.

Well land is not infinite. 160 acres is pretty big to track an animal through. Everyone cannot afford 2000 acres of land to hunt on. Many people hunt on smaller preserves
WTF else are they supposed to do with the hog, they destroy everything. That e-coli outbreak in 2006 was because of feral hogs that shat on the spinach fields

That fat little redneck did'nt chase anything for three hours. Probably on an ATV and daddy neck had his back with a f'n bazooka.
Saw the dad and kid on CNN. Sure they had a thick drawl, but they seemed intelligent and articulate.

I saw that original article on Fox News and shot it around work (mail order shooting and reloading supplies) via email and it made quite an impression on the staff, until somebody pointed out that he'd seen Hawaiians go hog hunting armed only with knives.
Almost as crazy as the customer I talked to once (and pissed off by observing I didn't think he had enough gun) who was hog hunting with a cap and ball revolver. <shiver>
I talked to a Texas customer once who shot hogs in what he described as a "typical" fashion. They lock themselves in the a semi-tractor trailer for carrying cattle and shoot wild boar with 308 rifles out the ventilation holes of the trailer.
Youse guys can keep the furry critter hunting. I'll stick with paper and steel.

Just as an aside, pig farming is associated with the most occupational hazards/injuries. Aside from the fact the the common pig factory sometimes has fumes and dust that can kill you in minutes, working in or near the pens often results in shattered knees, broken legs or death when sows ram and pin workers against the side. Mean, smart animal.
And for folks that think hunt boars in game preserves is a good idea should remember the feral boars are only in NA because they were imported to hunting preserves and escaped. Now they cause lovely problems.

yeah, the reason their are big hogs like this in the south is due to all the hog farms that got destroyed in the civil war. So large domestic pigs went into the wild mated with feral hogs.

you have to understand how 'small' a 150 acre plot is. You can probably sit in a lawn chair & with that size, more than likely just about everything is going to parade past you inside of a couple of hours.
