Jetta TDI. Will easily tow the boat. Diesel fuel mileage. Enormous trunk for transporting beer. No 2007 models available due to emission law change, but dealers have new 2006 cars on lot at low APR. Spring 2008 will see new VW diesels. Try it, you'll like it.........once you go diesel you'll never go back. :D

I'm totally sold on 4WD, crew-cab mid-size trucks at this point. I'm digging the Frontier, but would have picked up a Tacoma* if I'd found one at the right price with everything I needed on it. My Frontier holds 4 adults comfortably (5 if needed), gets about 20mpg highway (~17 or so around town) and would handle that boat just fine.
*Don't even start any "FToyota!" crap. When Ford, GM or Dodge builds a mid-size truck that doesn't feel like a Fisher Price job, we'll talk.
Spicoli, if you need help with a VW, I have a friend...
I`m with Meth...get a diesel of some kind. The fuel may cost about the same but you go about twice as far.
We picked up a Subaru Tribeca. Mileage is listed between 18-23. Around town is about 20, but I get barely 22 on the highway, even on long runs. The 2007 Tribeca calls for premium unleaded :saywhat: , but that does away with the 2008. I think towing is limited to 2000lb.
I am strangely fascinated with the Ford Edge, but I've heard mixed reviews.

I'm kinda looking at the Saturn Outlook. Can up it to 4500 lbs towing. GM engines scare me, but I never heard of 3.6 l headgaskets going bad.

hey Spikkly - my two cents.... TIFWIW
Edge = Mazda CX-7 or -9.... cant recall which exactly, but decent motor on a decent platform - towing capability should be the same for the V-6.
FJ - horrible blind spot at the B-pillar - I know a few friends\neighbors who have 'em and they are not getting good gas mileage at all here in SoCal. YMMV - obviously
Mazda 5 is a good little runner - might be a good choice for a good all arounder....
Good Luck !

I think you have that backwards -- the Magnum weighs north of 3800 lbs. In fact, Chrysler tried to get it rated as a truck, not because it has any of the capabilities thereof, but to cheat the CAFE stuff..
We picked up a Subaru Tribeca.

Look up the GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) of the Edge. The GVWR is the maximum total weight allowed, including the Edge itself, the people in it, cargo in it and whatever you are towing.
That's the only way to find if you can safely tow something. Vehicle manufacturers are not very honest about real towing capacity.

The CX7 is a different platform than the Edge. The Edge and CX9 share a platform while the CX7 is a custom platform mainly from pieces of the 3 and 5. The CX7 has the same turbo 2.3 as the Mazdaspeed 3 and 6. It's very nice in the 6 but I don't know if I'd subject it to routine towing duty.
Mazda is controlled by Ford although technically it's only something like 35% ownership. Mazda builds some cars in the US but both the CX7 and CX9 are builtin Japan.

Yeah, the hitch itself will do 3500 lbs, but that's not necessarily what the vehicle is capable of. Do the GVWR math. You've got a lot of kids and a lot of beer to haul as well as the boat!

It weighs the same as the Edge and gets similar mileage plus it has a lot more room inside, but they only rate the towing at 2000lbs. Even though the drive train is plenty stout I suppose that could reflect limitations in the hitch mounting points...?

If you really want mileage and still want something fun Get a Mini Cooper and have a ball. Six speed manual, it gets 32 mpg city / 40 mpg highway and drives like a go kart. I like the S version real well but not enough to give up 10mpg around town and get stuck buying 92 octane gas.

Nice boat. If you want fuel mileage and towing ability, a diesel is the only choice. About a year from now diesels will be offered from many manufacturers. Why not buy some used tow vehicle now and then get the dream rig a year from now?
As Chop said http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=175041
and http://www.egmcartech.com/2007/01/29/bmw-bringing-diesels-to-us-with-new-x5-in-mid-2008/

Buy a used tow vehicle and then get the car you want unless you've got issues with parking space.

OK. Down to this:
Edge, fully loaded, 418/mo. A-Plan lease 36mos. 0 dn.
FX4, fully loaded, 442/mo. A-Plan lease 24 mos. 0 dn.
Considering the price of gas, mileage, and payment difference, the FX4 costs me about $1000 more per year to drive.
I really really like the FX4, feel totally safe in it, and have the advantage of being able to haul just about anything I want in it. Plus it tows about 1,000,000,000 lbs with no prollem.
The Edge is very nice. As I said before, I was impressed and pleasantly surprised. The finish and drive are very nice. Interior is roomy and has all the bells and whistles. But I'm still not convinced that the thing can proficiently tow the boat. Just because it's rated at 3500lbs towing, doesn;t mean it will do the job very well. But I save $1000/year on this option.

How often do you tow your boat, every weekend, once a month?
Unless the boat is permanently hitched on, the towing is not that big an issue.
What are you doing the most, towing the boat or driving the kids to school?
The Edge is going to be able to tow the boat adequately (is this with the four wheel drive option?), the increased fuel economy will save you beer money and it will probably handle on the roads a lot better than the FX4.
