This website reminds me of one of the old captains we called captain crunch. Guaranteed once every summer he commanded a boat he hit something.

Must have, the scene would have been far more taped off if the operator had been killed. There is no way that is a 300 ton crane. It is a light duty crane, 35 or 40 ton at best.

Oh my ****ing jeeebus H. :shakehead
That boat is one of the MOST coolest boats in the world. A Sunseeker Predator.

At our Summer house (start hatin Ziggy) in MI, the old man Van Andel http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jay_Van_Andel had one that went by the name of Griffin. Sunseeker makes an incredible boat, work of art.
That's just ****ing sad.

We've got one at my Mom's place in Cape Cod. Fun, and easy for a non-sailor like me...
This is similar to what I used to own...

There is no way that is a 300 ton crane. It is a light duty crane, 35 or 40 ton at best. Exactly right, a light duty lattice boom mobile. The tells are the light boom and the counterweights (or lack thereof) which can be seen where they fell off. The counterweights from a 300 ton crane would make a stack bigger than this entire mobile truck crane.
They probably had enough crane, marginally, as they were able to boom up nearly vertical, but didn't have enough if the load swung out, shifted or the wind took it when they were near the top of the lift. The boat isn't all that heavy, but it's huge and makes a nice sail.
Since OTS has larger cranes and since they've been there since 1947 we can probably assume they were double booked, had a larger crane go down, etc. and the ship was sailing so they tried to get by with the smaller crane. Costly decision.
