View Full Version : Steve Johnson-"Just to watch practice and qualifying? I wouldn't come"

Nice and upbeat:

http://www.oregonlive.com/oregonian/stories/index.ssf?/base/sports/118152871532050.xml&coll=7&thispage=1

But he doesn't blame local promoter Mike Nealy for what happened Saturday, when the grandstands were nearly empty.

"There's more to it than just, 'How many people do you have show up?' " Johnson said. "Because it rained yesterday and today, does that mean we aren't coming back? No, the rain has nothing to do with it. Things happen that are out of your control."

and

The city's three-year contract with Champ Car is up, and talks will begin soon on a new deal. Portland isn't in a strong bargaining position, it would seem.

Johnson said the 2008 schedule comes out in September, "and sometime in August, we'll know."

He talked about possibly switching dates and having the next race in August or September, and noted that the idea of a street race downtown "has legs, but I don't know how long those legs are."

Champ Car has other options -- six new cities are willing to stage races, Johnson said -- and much better opportunities to make money if it leaves Portland.

Sure there are Steve, sure there are. :gomer:

losing cleveland or portland would be the last straw for me. those two races are the best ones left. portland has always been my favourite, and never will stop to be it.

**** like this and Pook's infamous picnic table quote is exactly why this series is a rudderless ship. I used to spend money to go to races so I could sit at a ****ing picnic table and watch ****ing practice and qualifying. **** drifting. **** beach volleyball. **** rock concerts. Give me some drivers going balls-to-the-wall in their Champ Cars.

Hell, following Johnson's reasoning, maybe we should just do away with Friday and Saturday and just line 'em up on Sunday. But if they're going to do that, then they might as well go with the Friday/Saturday night dirt track format and pack the weekend with heat races and B-mains and line up for the feature on Sunday. At least then the focus would be back on the racing.

Making a one day event of it is not a bad idea. It would cut expenses for the teams and provide more on track action for the fans.

I didn't need these quotes to know he is a jacktard. He helped ruin SCCA Pro Rally and once Champ Car hired him I knew nothing positive could come from it.

A street circuit being considered when there is a NATURAL TERRAIN road course within the city limits is the height of idiocy. I don't remember who said it a couple weeks ago in here, but how did Kalkoven make his millions?

Sad but true. They don't seem to get the idea that the further they dilute the product, the more they mortgage the future of the series for short term gains.

At the London press stop last month, he said they've had 30 cities come to them with an interest in races. He also said that some of these people don't understand that you can't race on cobblestone streets. He didn't say how many of the 30 cases were of that genre. I'm guessing right around 30. :gomer:

In any other company if an employee said that, his desk would be cleaned out before he got back. For the first time since this whole stupid split began I'm seriously asking why I am going to drag my whole family to Road America and spend over $1000 when Champcar seems content to step on their own nuts.

If it's possible to get Houston, San Jose and Vegas, I don't think it's absurd to think that they might be able to find another city somewhere in the world that might want a race.

Have to agree. I'm excited to go to races this season, but I'm almost more excited to see my friends who I only see at races.

I can see a family spending $1000 at a race. Tickets, hotel, food, souvenirs, etc. It can add up real quick.

Completely agree.

I think this is probably the part that is starting to deter me as well. It always costs us $1000 per race. The TICKETS are at least $250 most of the time for the full 3-day package. How can I be enthused when the GD President isn't? This is part of what makes me call it "boring" at the 'other place'--his attitude is starting to spill over to the fans.

possibly switching dates and having the next race in August or September They (the city/CART/CCWS/whoever) should have done that years ago. Rose Festival means that June has event saturation. June weather is often wet as well. September is the best month here for weather and there aren't 20 other events taking place every weekend. Hard to imagine that a date change alone would attract a larger audience though.

Marketing 101: If you have to resort to borrowed interest to sell your product you need to improve your product. In this case drivers that a paying audience wants to see race might be a place to start.

I think the sad reality is that this ship's sailed.

The only hope IMHO is that:

1) Year 2 w/the DP01 will create some opportunities for new teams to buy pre-owned DP01s and maybe generate a decent car count; and

2) That somehow changes everything. :p

It has to be someone who is over Gomerville.

God could run Champ Car and it would be a challenge because no one wants the product. That’s why I don’t criticize the “Festival of Speed” concept. When people won’t show up for open wheel on ovals and they won’t show up for open wheel on road courses, you have to try something else. My hope is that Champ Car can survive until someone figures out what the public wants and Champ Car can provide it.

Who that someone is, I haven't a clue.

The public wants close racing with large car counts, and a good story line. I loved going to Road America last fall, and I would go again, but it has very little to do with Champ Car. The race would have been a lot of fun if the racing had been closer. I was the only one who saw it, Rob and Cork remember, but the dumb kid who tried riding his bike down the hill on the outside of T5 was the most exciting thing that happened during the race that we saw (the kid was ok for anyone keeping track). The DP01 was a great attempt at what needs to be done, but honestly, I think they could have done more.

I think this is kind of rambling because I am tired, but it is just really hard to keep going sometimes with how management runs the ship. I didn't follow open wheel, except for the Indy 500, before the split, and I was won over by CART in 1996. I wouldn't have envisioned this 11 years ago, but I am 24 and I hope that open wheel can get back to some semblance of health by the time I am 50.
