Good stuff there.
Sad but true part 3,419, AKA thanks Tony :tony: 87,361 :
Ten years ago, during an Autosport Awards dinner in London, I discussed the CART/IRL split, among many other things, with Bill France Jr. France asked me to keep the specifics of our CART/IRL conversation off the record and I honored that agreement during his lifetime.
"You're really worried about Tony pulling the trigger on his new formula, aren't you?" France asked rhetorically. "You think it's going to end up destroying Indy car racing, don't you?"
He paused for a second, glanced down, then looked me straight in the eye. "Well, I agree with you," France declared. "I think it will. You know my father and I always believed there's got to be one man in control and you can't have any competitors. You've got to have one series with a solid name and brand. Those guys are putting themselves in danger of losing all that."

Cheery editorial. :(
The points he raised are nothing new, but none the less important and relevant.
This year I've probably caught more IRL races than Champ Car races and on more than one occasion I was thinking that they truly have become CART lite.
The Euro-Trash '08 Monsters of Champ Car Tour isn't that appealing to me as an American fan. I already follow F1. I want to be able to go to races.
Drivers...I like Wilson...and ...um...uh...help me out with some names. Point being, with Seabass gone, who's left?
I'm close to actually turning into an IRL fan. If it wasn't for a few key factors; 1.TG, nuff said. 2. My opinion that it's contrived, not just the cars, but the racing...Dixon and Dario...last lap showdown for the championship? Yeah Right!! 3. the cars... still crap wagons. 4. What was with the amateur post race "show" yesterday. I was slightly embarrassed for them. I could go on, but I won't.
Point is...when Champ Car starts losing their diehard fans like me...things ain't' right. Things are really, really wrong.

This wasn't a good season for the IRL... not nearly as compelling as 2006, the racing just wasn't that great all year. Good for Dario though, he had luck on his side but he was good enough to take advantage when it was there for him.
TG - meh. Don't like him, but he ain't going anywhere, so I just try to ignore him. Not so hard since his team is usually touring around the back somewhere. :p

Hmmm, what is it about posters named Sean on this forum. ;)
Zzzzzz. Tony's vision will forever haunt this sport....KIRBY, WhoTF cares anymore? In fact, Tony's the only one who has the power to fix it but he won't. **** him and OW.

You're not alone. I suspect that a slight change of management, some new hardware and a few schedule changes would prompt quite a few CC folks to venture on the other side of the fence.
I still like KD's suggestion best: burn 'em both down and let someone other than TG or an "Amigo" run something new.
Funny what the cursefilter lets through, innit? Wonder if if censors "beaverbong"?

I feel the same way. I almost wish I gave the IRL a chance at Mid-Ohio. Maybe next year.

I guess Toeknee must have finished up dragging the kicker & screamers. :tony:
Now he's just waiting for the "oh hells bells, I might as wells" to come straggling in. :gomer:
Replace Brian Barnhart with someone like Cottman, let Tony Promote the Indianapolis 500, let Kalkhoven Promote 3 of his current races
Let them both continue being team owners
Then just maybe we will all meet at a race in the near future

I think you're actually more right than you know. Just looking at the people on this board, while we all universally hate TG for making this mess, quite a few have eased somewhat to the IRL. And it's not really anything they did, but what ChampCar is doing to disenfranchise us. They're making more visions for CC than TG is making to the IRL lately. You're not going to get any growth changing things up all the time. While they're trying to find some way to grow, they are driving people away. If they do keep at it and do find something stable, maybe people will come back and it will grow. For now, it's still going down hill.
They have to change the cars/engines in the IRL before I will watch. I'll be left with F1.

yup.
I`ve seen others call it silly, but I`ve seen these things in St.Pete with ALMS. :shakehead
No way. The earl will never be an acceptable alternative. :yuck:
I haven't and never will follow a sport run by FTG.
So both Franchitti and Hornish are leaving the IRL to race in NASCAR, joining the growing trend of open-wheel drivers getting on board the NASCAR juggernaut. Needless to say, Franchitti and Hornish--Indy 500 winners and IRL champions both--will be hard to replace although they will likely continue to run the Indy 500 around their regular NASCAR commitments.
That'll be a neat trick. Since when did they get teleporting to work? :saywhat:

Unless this is GK's way of saying that the I500 will be moved back to the 11a starting time, therefore allowing the double? I swear, the racing press has more double talk than a bad spy novel.

I don't think it's "silly", the IRL cars are pretty clearly inferior to the DP-01 on road courses. Still watchable on TV, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see an IRL road/street race live.
On an oval, different story, their cars looked fine (sounded like **** though).
New chassis coming, which presumably will take into account their new road racing endeavours... right? Right??? :)

I used to post three or four times a day (at least) on here. Prior to this post, my last post was July 3. I haven't watched a race (Champ Car or IRL) since Indy. racer's post sums it up for me as well. I agree with every word.

Probably...and by the rate the irl is going it'll be called the DP01A

My father-in-law has ridden in a Japanese car, and believe me, he has better reasons to hate than you.
Never say never.
Sean, you have expressed my feelings as well. The war is over, and when it stopped being a war, it stopped being a holy war. Few care as much as they did a few years ago, and indifference leads to acceptance.
To me, the turning point was Milwaukee, but really, before that, the development of the DP01 signaled the end of "real racing, real sport." So now you can choose to be a crapwagon partisan (either side) or you can simply catch the race that is on.
Hey, spics, I got an in at the Speedway. Need a police escort into the track? :D

Let's go this year and use somebody's suite to get rip roaring drunk then puke off of the stairs overlooking the entrance to pit road from gasoline alley onto Danikova's car when they wheel it back to the garages after her pit-in spin. :gomer:

Never say never.
We won the war and then did the appropriate thing of helping them back on their feet afterward, and became friends.
If Champ Car won the war, completely decimating Tony, and then decided to help him back on his feet again (wouldn't call that appropriate, but just supposing), then sure, I could give up the hate. Won't happen.
As it is more likely Champ Car will be the smoking ruin, I don't see Tony helping the remnants of Champ Car back on its feet by adopting Champ Car specs, letting the teams run at least part of the show, etc.
As a result, NEVER!. Or to put it another way, it's FTG forever!
