Mr. Dennis is now a full on martyr.

McLaren may decide not to appeal their harsh penalty in the interests of Formula One, team boss Ron Dennis said on Saturday.

The record $100 million USD fine and loss of all McLaren's 2007 constructors' points were imposed by the FIA on Thursday at a hearing into the spying controversy.

"If we do not appeal this, it will be because we want closure," Dennis told reporters at the Belgian Grand Prix.

"The other teams I hope will understand the financial penalty we will swallow in the interests of the sport."

Maybe he's concerned that further investigation associated with an appeal will uncover more damning evidence.

Ron knows he did it and he's screwed and he can afford to settle, so it's classic damage control...................this post should smoke out Ron's #1 Fanboi. ;)

If the 2007 McLaren is built with Ferrari technology, then maybe McLaren should be made to run the 2006 car.

Just saying, that's all. ;)

"Closure?" Don't make me larf.... $100m buys a lot of closure apparently...:shakehead

Uncle Ron says he'll take it to his shareholders and let them decide whether to appeal or not...now if I'm a shareholder and the 'closure' argument gets floated, despite his protestations to the contrary, the automatic assumption is that the FIArrari has indeed got the goods on McLaren, that the team did indeed cheat and that the only suitable response is to send Uncle Ron on permanent 'gardening leave'.....

What a shambles...

I wondered the same thing. Also, they mentioned it would be minus the seasonal payout they would have won which makes me wonder how much that is as well....Huge amounts of money any way you slice it.

It's WMSC or FIA money. I doubt Bernard will see any of it.

There was an article with Max Mosley on Speed. (http://www.speedtv.com/articles/auto/formulaone/40287/) He says roughly half will go back into the "point" fund and all the other teams will share it.

The other half he wants to use to bring along new drivers, subject to the approval of the other WMSC/FIA board members.

Bernie did mention in an interview that there was talk at the boardtable about complete exclusion for the whole team... aka - throwing them right out.

Now of course that seems very drastic, but I wonder if it was a discreet message to Ron that says appeal at your own peril....

Read somewhere that the estimated payout to McLaren would have been approx. $50 million if they'd won the constructors, so the fine of $100 million minus the payout would be around $50 million in round numbers. Still serious money by not quite what it sounded like at first blush.

They said it had no Ferrari IP in it. I read the decision, and McLaren isn't banned from 2008 automatically. I wonder how they'll determine if it should or should not be? Is this years car even considered to be illegally developed?

I thought the purpose of the 2 year exclusion would be to set a team back after they had gained an advantage in development.

Not yet, no.

But you knew that, right?

They don't want to apeal because they know that if they do the penalty will be much worse. 100 million is nothing when you consider the TV money the teams get every year. I'm sure they would have received 60-70 million this year alone and are probably owed 30-40 from last year. Like I said, I doubt McLaren will actually have to cut a check from all this.

OK, so now that the McLaren end of this has run it's course how much should Ferrari be fined for being the root cause of all of this nonsense? After all, it was their lack of security that occasioned this mess and their man that passed the secrets in the first place. ;)

A larger question is whether Ferrari will fall back into their internal political warfare of the pre-Brawn era. ?

Those quotes from Dennis are completely and utterly confusing. I can't tell if it's from bad journalism or if Ron Dennis is switching subjects midstream....

That really surprises me. I would imagine that the telephone lines between germany and Woking were fairly burning up this week as to why the Mercedes name stands now for being confirmed cheaters with no push-back from the team whatsoever...

If Alonso or Hamilton win the WDC, Mercedes wins too. Sure, Ferrari gets the constructor's title but their driver/team will get all the attention. They won't be saying the "Constructor's Champion Ferrari", they'll be saying the "WDC [Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso] of McLaren Mercedes".
