I've always liked the way Kalgoorlie rolls off the tongue.

Broken Hill fascinates me. How could a hill be broken? Mining??

Then there is always Rottenest Island. Which is the Rotten Island? And the Rottener Island?

Nice list. I'll add Oywyhee (bastardization of Hawaii), Stinkwater Pass, Bloody Basin and Walla Walla, Washington home of sweet onions and a big prison.

Rats-nest actually. Wilhelm Vlaming discovered the island when the Dutch were eying the great south land as a possible colony. When he saw the islands native quokkas he thought they were huge rats. God knows what he thought on first sight of a wallaby or a big red. Ultimately the Dutch decided that, as arid, hot and devoid of vital water, the west coast was unsuitable for colonization and named it Van Diemen's Land.

You're hired. With an honorary mention to OOW.

I think the quokkas are cute but a friend mine thinks they are awful. Naturally, ;) I sent him a postcard with two huge quokkas on it when I visited Rottenest Island about 10 years ago. I had completely forgotten the history.

Edit: I've always sort of like Kissimmee, FL
