View Full Version : RM year recap
some interesting tidbits are in it.
Rumor has it that Champ Car is suing San Jose, Phoenix and Las Vegas.
And Andretti Green Racing will be in Vegas in 2009 with a little help from Steve Wynn and the Maloof brothers.huh?
fair and balanced? (http://www.speedtv.com/commentary/41623/)
Katherine Legge's wild flip in '06 was the last time Champ Car was mentioned on SportsCenter.
TV Azteca only showed the final two races of the year because of Dominguez iffy status and claims it won't televise CC in 2008 unless the veteran from Mexico City has a good full-time ride from the outset.

What's the source of that, the braintrust at gomerville?
No secret IRL approached LV promoter quite awhile ago. Probably conducting damage assessment of their raid on the tire dump and making promises to "help out.";) No doubt ChampCar wanted to be at those other venues but they were not going to foot the bill. Long Beach HAD to be bought, these didn't. Hated the San Jose track and the Phoenix layout was abysmal but I think Las Vegas could be very important to the future of either series OR a mergification.

Why would anyone read Robin Miller? A monkey with a crayon would convey the same amount of useful information.
Have you applied for the position?:p

Wynn and Maloof? Wasn't Wynn going to build La Reve or something and have a racetrack on site, but then he ended up building The Wynn Las Vegas? I'm not sure where they will stage it. I can't see the strip getting shutdown, ar any casino having access cut off given their response to the first CC race.

La Reve is the Wynn. He changed the name because no one could say "La Reve" (pronounced "rev" like "rev your engine") Also because he's probably an egomaniac but I don't know that for sure. ;)
Another guess about that race track idea is that he changed his philosophy from looking from the outside (pirates at Treasure Island; fountains at the Bellagio) to looking from the inside (exterior is extremely plain; it's the inside that is magnificent). Or, that's what his interviews in the travel mags say.............
It's recap not an analysis, and everything in it seems accurate to me.

Not enough cars. French guy led a lot of laps and won big trophy. New car pretty quick most places. Can't remember who is driving the cars because most seats are up for auction weekly. Forgot some of the races were even on. Taped some and did'nt watch them. Some races were pretty good. Street races suck, but next year looks better with more road courses. That's all Miller knows for sure too unless he got a deal on a crystal ball someplace.

The inside of that place is ridiculously unbelievable. The detail in the woodwork, and walls and paint you could wander the place for hours with your jaw on the floor.
huh?
I haven't seen this tidbit posted anywhere.
Champ Car race in Vegas not happening in 2008 without promoter
November 6, 2007
LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) -- The Vegas Grand Prix will not return in 2008.
Race officials said they were unable to find a new promoter to replace Phoenix-based DDB Ventures, which hosted the inaugural Las Vegas race last Easter weekend but canceled a December race in Phoenix and chose not to return next year.
In announcing the Champ Car World Series schedule for next year earlier this week, Steve Johnson, president of the open-wheel series, said, ``The promoters of the 2007 Las Vegas event were the same promoters who canceled our Phoenix event. To make a long story short, we're not prepared to work with them again. Though we did consider different options for returning to Vegas in '08, the tight timetable just didn't allow it to happen.
``We'd certainly consider returning to Vegas in the future, but really only under the right situation.''
The race, which was run as the Champ Car season opener, drew a small crowd on the holiday weekend, but drivers said the circuit built on the streets of downtown Las Vegas was one of the best temporary tracks they have raced on.
Johnson said that Las Vegas officials are hoping that the race can be renewed sometime in the future.
``While there is some disappointment, there is also understanding by everybody I spoke to, including members of the city council,'' he said. ``As they said, they're going to do whatever they can to try to get us back there in the future, and they understood the challenges that we faced.''
DDB's owners, Dale Jensen and Brad Yonover, closed their race promotion business shortly after canceling the Phoenix event.

I've heard it from the other side. Evidently PTB @ CCWS are awfully peed at the PHX deal, and said no more to Vegas. Who knows what the terms of the contract were, but evidently its some bad blood. Not sure I believe it all entirely, but it did come from the non-CCF, pro Cotman side of the management fence.

Should be interesting by the end of the year with a shake up or 2. If that even surprises anyone anymore?
Cue Ed Sorenson interjection.

Pot meet kettle. Funny how the people that bash Miller basically do the same crap to him. You have no idea what Miller has. It really makes you look foolish to suggest otherwise.

Perhaps I'm taking the quote to literally. I read it as Champ Car suing the cities. No way do I believe that. The promoters? Maybe.
I don't however believe Miller has any sources inside Champ Car anymore.

my a$$umption is the promoters, not the city. have a contract to run a race with a city's cooperation would likely be an asset.

Is the design the same, minus the race track? I thought the design was changed in addition to the "theme".

Yes, the design was changed quite a bit when he decided to emphasize the experience you have once you're inside and forget about the outside.
He attributes this idea to his wife (smart man. lol). All his previous properties had gotten people's attention from the street. (Treasure Island, Mirage, Bellagio). He was disgusted at a big shopping center going in right across from the old Desert Inn (where he was building La Reve) and afraid people would remember his place as the one across from that ugly thing. His wife said to forget about the outside and make people want to be inside. He likens it to a kid wanting to jump a wall to see what's inside. Make it a bit mysterious and advertise that way. According to Rogue Leader, the design worked. Certainly the advertising is. I have not seen it but am heading to LV for a travel convention the first week of December so I'll check it out.

Maybe not officially but my guess is that there is always someone willing to spill some beans. Even if it's just because they had a bad day and want to create a little mayhem. Like we don't have enough already.

Interesting. I really like the exterior of The Wynn. I'm a fan of simple and stylish. The inside is also very, very nice. And if you're inclined, you can try and steal Penske's Enzo. ;)

Lame :shakehead Nope the only inside sources for CHAMP CAR belong on internet forums now right? Please step away from the CCF kool aid. Miller's roleadex is a lot deeper then a lot of people give him credit for. Don't let your hate blind you.
Any chance media relations improve with Cotman running the show? :fingers crossed:

Seem to me you are a bit over dramatic in your defense of Mr. Miller. I was simply stating my opinion. Suppose Derrick Walker is speaking to Miller these days?

Oh, insomniac, I also love the outside of the Wynn. But probably best not to touch anything to do with Penske.

I don't know guess you would have to ask him. Seems to me though that Robin has not cost Mr. Walker any coin unlike KK may do. IMHO I would bet that Walker may be on better speaking terms with Robin Miller then with KK.

^^^^ Well his point would be... forget that, remember St Petersburg race? Andretti and friends seem to have a knack for getting promoter to dump CCWS in favor of the IRL...
