View Full Version : Daytona 24hrs
Offseason got you bummed out?
Unsure how you feel about a merger?
Why not try the Daytona 24, and see if you can enjoy it? :D
An Indycar series would have many similarities yes, no? ;)
1. Ownership you hate.
2. Teams to root for and against.
3. Good drivers mixed in with wankers.
4. High speed banking.
5. Ugly, slow cars.
6. Gomer/No fans.
This year's Champ Car contingent consists of -
Prototypes:
#60 Wilson & Rahal, Michael Shank Racing
#11 Dalziel, SAMAX Racing (running with Milka)
#99 Vasser, Gainsco (with Fogarty/Gurney)
GT:
#81 Doornbos, Porsche GT-3, Synergy Racing
#80 Jan Heylen, Porsche GT-3, Synergy
#70 Raphael Matos, RX-8, SpeedSource

A punch in the jaw might be better than a punch in the nuts, but I'm not looking forward to either. Moot point though, I guess, since Picchio's gone.
If all cars look like the Crawford, had less tube-frame, and more horsepower, I think there'd be a lot less animosity towards the class.
I disagree. It is, fundamentally, an exercise in futility. They are racing 24 hours to prove that if you take a limited, very durable, underpowered package you can drive it for twenty four hours. Totally purposeless. The mechanical failures you see are not a result of pushing the envelope, because the teams are required to submit the cars for dyno and aero tests for the purpose of equalization.
It's freaking NASCAR, a pointless marketing exhibition.
extramundane
01-26-08, 08:41 PM
Oh, I'm not suggesting it would be a great thing, but at least it would be somewhat more interesting if the cars weren't fugly and underpowered. And I realize that even the best of car specs wouldn't matter when you've got a sanctioning body which does things like mandate 5-lug wheels on the GT cars. :irked:
Watching this right now makes me realize how much I'd love to see the ALMS prototypes on the Daytona high banks. :\

They can either be the official adult diaper of Grand Am, or the official adult diaper of the Rolex 24.
The ads would include some of the most well known drivers telling the viewers to wear them without shame because they do.
Drivers walking on the beach talking about which one they use and why.

Yes, in typical NASCAR fashion they managed to change the caution procedures in a way that bunched up the field which caused multiple cautions on restarts.
After the first stint Scooter bashed the new procedures and he correctly predicted how it would play out.
Grand Am is the new IROC. Drivers from differnet series competeing mostly for fun.
I saw the Vision car on the flatbed, but I musta missed the replay. Wha happen? :D
Correction: Grand-Am-Daytona 24-Hour Story
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -In a Jan. 27 story about the Rolex 24-Hour race, The Associated Press erroneously reported Chip Ganassi said, "It seemed like that car caused half the caution flags out there," referring to his No. 02 car. Ganassi denied making that statement.
