Ugh. I think this is a "being on SPEED sucks" thread.
Great for the hardcores like... well... me. Bad for attracting viewers.
Overnights. Waiting for the finals...
Considering the Chicago market wasn't included since many didn't seem to get it due to a Comcast problem, I'd say the numbers are as good as last year or a little better. Good to see, that when back on a National network, Cart can easily hold it's own to earl numbers and even the quals to the 497.5.
My parents watched Brands because I was there. Of course they don't have a Neilson box so nobody recorded that fact except me.
The finals are "the usual".
The race from Germany turned in a 1.0 rating and 3 share, reaching 1,092,000 households and 1,351,000 viewers. The contest from Brands Hatch garnered a 0.8 rating and 3 share, drawing 905,000 households and 1,058,000 viewers.

I read an unsubstantiated quote that the CBS pre-show the week prior to BH garnered a .9. Do you know if this is true nrc?
That was on Saturday, right? (I was out of town.)
If so, it got a 1.0 (1,080,000 households) (At least according to this: http://tv.zap2it.com/news/ratings/sports/030504sport.html )

Thank you JoeBob. Now, what does this say about Champ Car ratings?
I don't know if it's safe to assume that CBS Sports Spectacular was the CART preview or not. I don't recall it being called that at any point, so that could be something else from that day.
Having watched ratings since before the split, I think that fan interest in open wheel racing has been "lost in the noise" of TV ratings. There are any number of factors that affect open wheel racing's TV ratings much more than actual fan interest.
Two tape delayed races on consecutive days that have better ratings that the Motegi crap on the rat network. I suspect that a live CBS CART race will rip any regular seaon IRL race this year, too.
Take heart. Their ESPN/ESPN2 races will underperform too.
Tony George has tried to kill formula car racing in the US. Chris Pook at least has kept it on life support.
I made this point about ratings elsewhere when John Kernan was gloating about the IRL over the air .9s compared to the CART cable only .2s.
Not that billyhack would ever come here to admit that I was right. :p
Anyone know how people viewing via satelite enter into the counts?
Good question.
And how does Fox Sport Espanol figure in?
Nielsen mentions satellite viewers in their metered markets FAQ, so they're included. As with everything else with the ratings you have to trust it to Nielsen that they're properly represented statistically.
Fox Sports Espanol viewers would normally not be included in the ratings we see since it's listed as a different program. I doubt that the impact is significant for network events since FSE only reaches 5 million homes. It may have some small impact on the SPEED numbers this year, but probably not enough to explain the drop.

I've wondered if those of us watching speed through one of the dish systems are being counted. I suspect no, not that it matters to the advertisers looking at the Nielsens. :(
