He never made it a full lap before the Ferrari lump in the back expired, he was done for the session.

Do they still have the 2 race/ engine rule? If so, does that mean he has to take a grid penalty this week?

I think if you have a new engine the penalty will be applied from qualifying in that race up to the second race. So I think he's OK.

This practice engine should have been a new one anyway. I'm glad Sebastien still avoids any penalty and can get a new (and hopefully better) engine.
I think if you have a new engine the penalty will be applied from qualifying in that race up to the second race. So I think he's OK.
So just to clarify, since his engine blew up during the last race, he gets a new engine this race without penalty????
Then, since the new engine also blew up before qualifying, they can replace it again (This part does make sense to me).
Hypothetical question: If he did not blow up last week, but then did blow up in practice this week, is there a grid penalty installing a new engine?
2 blown engines in as many LAPS! Is TorroRosso doing something majorly wrong, is Ferrari giving them faulty engines, or does the Ferrari not get along with the standard ECUs?
I think you can only change engines without penalty when you park it before the race is over.
He're some info from the official site http://www.formula1.com/inside_f1/rules_and_regulations/sporting_regulations/6841/
From 2008, a driver will not be penalised the first time he needs a replacement engine during the season, unless it is at the final event of the championship.
Otherwise, ahead of qualifying drop 10 places and after qualifying start from the back. But I still think there's an exception if you don't finish the race.
Here's a summary of all the rule changes for this year. http://www.formula1.com/inside_f1/rules_and_regulations/sporting_regulations/6844/
Found it! http://www.formula1.com/inside_f1/rules_and_regulations/sporting_regulations/6841/fia.html
28) SPARE CARS, ENGINES AND GEARBOXES
28.4 For the purposes of this Article and Article 28.6 only, an Event will be deemed to comprise P3, the qualifying practice session and the race.
a) Each driver may use no more than one engine for two consecutive Events in which his team competes. Other than under f) below, should a driver use a replacement engine before the end of the qualifying practice session he will drop ten places on the starting grid at that Event and an additional ten places each time a further engine is used.
Unless the driver fails to finish the race (see below) the engine fitted to the car at the end of the Event must remain in it until the end of the next Event. Any driver who failed to finish the race at the first of the two Events for reasons which the technical delegate accepts as being beyond the control of the team or driver, may start the second with a different engine without a penalty being incurred.
f) Except during the last Event of the Championship season, each driver will be permitted to use a replacement engine without incurring a penalty the first time this becomes necessary during the season.

Friday is now essentially considered a test day. Teams may use as many engines and transmissions as they wish during Friday practice without penalty.
Engines fall under a 2 race rule and gearboxes now fall under a 4 race rule. Gear ratios maybe changed once between races. I believe its a 5 spot grid penalty for changing transmissions after p3 has commenced.

My understanding was your engine blowing up during a race was penalty enough. However, as someone pointed put, it's not from qualifying of the firsat race but rather the practice session before qualifying. So your engine (which usually wouldn't be the engine from the last race) on Friday can blow up without issue.
On your hypothetical question, he wouldn't have been using that engine yesterday.

Ahhh, now I know why I was confused. I thought the McLarens were on opposite sides of the track. I didn't realize they were both in the line and one moved over after Heidfeld went through. That's why they were the only ones to get penalized.

Despite the grid penalties, McLaren is not out of the running for Sunday's race. The Sepang circuit is very broad, presenting multiple passing opportunities. Rain -- which has been torrential in past Malaysian GPs -- is also forecast, which may offset any grid advantages.

Yes Massa stayed relatively away, but we only see what the coverage shows.
When they are done....race in and get out of the way.....or this will be a problem ALL YEAR.....
What if some day this season it is just between what Massa did and the Maclareans did...
The stewards have to decide? Thats rediculous...

You see the dark areas of the track where the rubber is laid down? Is Massa on it? Is Raikkonen on it? Is Hamilton on it? Is Kovaleinen on it? The answer is pretty black and white from the coverage they chose to show. I'm not sure what coverage you think exists that would show the Ferrari's on the racing line while Heidfeld was doing his final lap.

There is no specific coverage...I'm speaking to the concept...Put yourself in the cockpit of a last lap desparate driver having to even THINK about slow cars all over the place....and this could be avoided. What if this desparate driver "falls" off line.....disaster...
I don't want to belabour this, but as I said, on-line off-line..(and I know what the difference is) The whole allowance of it is not in my favor.. Someone will get hurt... give e'm the fuel of one lap after succeedingly getting the "pole". (or good run)
I don't argue the "who was who wasn't on/off line" with you at all and to whomever asked what the heck "I" was watching....("the same thing you were ") When I saw this (and thought the first second I saw it) was...just what was going to happen .. "This ain't good"....
Not arguing with you guys....
There has to be a better way to end this now before we see it too often all season...
Ok I was a little harsh with the Massa comment, ...
It was the overall concept why I said it, not specifically to the current rules...
I leaped forward in my mind...

Hour-by-hour (http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/businesstraveler/hourbyhour/MYXX0031?from=dayDetails_topnav_business) doesn't help much either. I surmise it'll be like qualifying. People will predict with no accuracy. It will either be raining or not raining. :)

But racing lines cross left and right depending on the corners.....and at some point staying off the race-line...means you HAVE to cross across the raceline...
I'm just imagining after its over, give them only 1 lap of fuel and let them stay at speed to get back to the pits....

But the McLarens were nowhere close to a point like that. In fact, if that was their last lap, the shortest distance to the S/F line from the final corner is off the racing line. There really is no gray area in that situation. Everyone on the team admits they did it, but it wasn't intentional, just brain fade. I doubt anyone forgets now.

I was going to say Massa chokes, but I'm not sure what the word is for throwing the car off with no pressure on you. He must see red (like PT) when everything doesn't go his way.
By the way, what is the rule on getting pulled out of a sandtrap? I saw both Bourdais and Massa had the cars running. (And Bourdais was still in the car when the crane lifted him up.) In the past I've seen them push Schumacher out and last year they lifted Hamilton out after 6 or 7 cars went off into the same gravel trap in the rain.
