"There are no bargains to be had here," said David Sassman, who has been following racing for five decades. "You have a lot of private collectors willing to invest more dollars than the average fan."
The collectors were happy to do it.
"It's a very unique experience," Johnston said. "You never see anything like this event. There are a lot of amazing cars under one roof."

Gene Cottingham, Champ Car’s chief financial officer, expected to learn the finally tally from Gallivan Auctioneers Wednesday. All indications, from the size of the crowd to the competitive bidding, were that it went well.
“We didn’t do an appraisal, and when you’re dealing with artifacts, it’s really difficult to know what they’re worth,” Cottingham said. “But it seems like there’s a lot of things going for more than retail.”
Eddie Wachs was surprised by the size of the gathering, which numbered several hundred and was a mix of fans, collectors and racers. He came to bid on a transporter for his Atlantic Series team and wound up paying $92,000 for a 1998 Featherlite trailer.
“We thought it would go for around $50,000,” he lamented.
Dick Eidswick, Champ Car’s president, was monitoring the sale for series co-owner Kevin Kalkhoven and also was bidding on selected memorabilia items for his former boss. Eidswick professed satisfaction at seeing Champ Car’s equipment find a new home and said his only sadness stemming from the unification with the Indy Racing League was the loss of jobs.
Tom Deery, president of the World of Outlaws sprint-car series, was looking for bargains among the signage and other promotional items for sale. He also was hoping to pick up some television equipment.
“I’m very surprised by the size of the crowd, but Champ Car was a class organization and everybody knows their stuff is top-shelf,” Deery said. “I think just about every sanctioning body in America is represented here one way or another.
“A certain percentage of the crowd is just onlookers, but it’s a real cross section of the industry. It’s pretty remarkable, actually.”
IRL = NOT a class act. Thanks Tony.

Ben Johnston's potential "Reynard CART Series" as it was referred to at one point by an idiot seems to be getting closer to reality. He bought a few of the cars yesterday. I'd guess he now has about 16 champ car chassis' of varying make and vintage. Couldn't be much worse than '07 was.

Among the items for sale were five Champ Car chassis, four of which Johnston bought. He purchased the first for $47,000 -- he said he paid too much for it -- but he wants to use them in a series starting in 2010. After his purchases, he now has 20 chassis.
"The cars we run will have environmentally friendly motors," he said. "I want to promote eco-friendly, alternate solutions."
I'm guessing the cars will never see the first motor installed, which I suppose is the most eco-friendly solution possible. I just hope this doesn't dilute the AOW marketplace or steal any exposure from Mr. G's DP01 series. :gomer:

What the hell? That is not racing. Make cars that run on coal, or baby seals, and cover them in sponsorship for alcohol, cigarettes, chewing tobacco, and payday loans. Ugh.
Who is Ben Johnston?
Wealthy SCCA Atlantic (is that redundant?) guy in the southeast.
I'd guess if he pulls this off it will be more like a BOSS type series than trying to compete with IndyCar or Poledance One GP.

Final Tally- 1.2 million
The auction of assets of the former Champ Car World Series raised $1.2-million on Tuesday.
Chief financial officer Gene Cottingham says that money will now be turned over to the U.S. bankruptcy court where it will be distributed to creditors of the defunct racing series.
Champ Car filed for bankruptcy back on March 6 following unification with the IRL series. It listed debts of almost $10-million with Cosworth Inc. the largest creditor, owed more than $1.8-million. Cosworth is owned by former Champ Car co-owners Kevin Kalkhoven and Gerald Forsythe.
The auction, which included everything from helmets and stickers to full fledged racing cars and transporters, drew a larger than expected crowd of fans, collectors and racers.
Among those on hand was Ben Johnston, a collector from Atlanta, who purchased four of the five racing cars which were available - one of which he spent $47,000 to buy. Johnston, who owns some 20 chassis, says he plans to use them in a series starting in 2010.
Chuck Haines, who runs Can-Am Cars Ltd., a collecting and restoring business in the St. Louis area, called the auction a unique, once in a lifetime opportunity. While he did bid on one of the race cars, he left empty handed, saying the prices were being driven up by sentimental fans.
"I knew they'd be high, but I didn't expect it to this extent," he said. "I thought certain things would go high. Things just got out of hand."
Even current racing teams found the bidding to be too much for their liking.
John O'Gara, the IndyCar team manager for Sarah Fisher Racing, tried to buy a transporter but stopped when the bidding topped $91,000. The trailer eventually sold for $92,000 to Champ Car Atlantic team owner Eddie Wachs, whose initial estimate was that the trailer wouldn't go for more than $50,000.
"We're trying to get our race team built up," O'Gara said. "We knew what we could afford."
