I wonder what happened to the mobile hospital Champcar used to have
When a manufacturer offers a free car and pays for it to be tricked out for your safety car program, wouldn't you take it? And since after the mods the car probably couldn't be registered for the street even in Alabama anymore, what do you to but put it on blocks after the season? And in their day neither of those would be considered a crap ride.

FTG and the IRL got that in the merger.

This part still makes me sick to my stomach. :irked:
This part still makes me sick to my stomach. :irked:
At least it is an admission that CART/CCWS were the legitimate successor series to the AAA/USAC national championships. :)
The IRL needs ownership of the results of those year to make itself look legitimate.

I just would've figured that there would be some point in the last 20 years where auctioning one off for charity would've made more sense than keeping it in storage.
Too bad they didn't have MR2 pace cars. :(

Oh, the coneage! That’s one of the saddest photos of all for me. I made a small mascot cone for the CCIC photo booth back in ’07, which traveled to all the races. I believe that “Runoff” is probably still inside one of those big orange transporters. I hope he finds a good home.

I have a good number of the old Cleveland GPs DVRed at my parents' house, and I remember at least one of the races in the early 80s had that thing as one of the pace cars. I had no idea what it was until just yesterday.
That was Andrew Bordin and IIRC, a Pioneer exec. Bad deal.
Yeah, it was Bordin and a Pioneer exec at Fontana. Here's the story from the time:
FONTANA, Calif. -- Driver Andrew Bordin and a passenger were
injured Sunday in a pace car crash prior to the start of CART's Marlboro
500 at California Speedway.
Bordin, a competitor in the CART Toyota Atlantic development series,
was giving a guest ride to Yoshimichi Inada, senior managing director of
Pioneer Electrics, when he lost control of the specially built Acura NSX
pace car in turn two on the 2-mile oval.
Dr. Steve Olvey, director of medical affairs for CART, said Bordin
fractured and dislocated the fourth cervical vertebrae and Inada was
unconscious briefly at the scene of the accident. Both were transported
by ambulance to Loma Linda Hospital for further evaluation and
treatment.
Olvey said both were conscious and alert when they left the track.

So the teams leased the DP01's from CC, or did CC buy them back? I don't really buy either one of those. I can believe that the teams were told not to sell the cars, or more likely it was suggested that they hold on to them for IndyCar 5.0.

Good Spickly hate on this here thread. :p
I did talk to several folks there about buying a pace car/truck etc....but one thing is really fubar'd up with most of this: You can buy it, but there is no facking title, no registration, in other words - this stuff ain't street legal. And most of the pace car manufacturers just left the cars there, and i am sure have no idea they did. :\ One exception is Mazda, they got wise and got their crap outta there. Joel was building a Mazda 9 and another Speed3 (I think that's what it was). Anywho, if you wanna buy one, be prepared to go thru a legal nightmare trying to get any sort of title, at least that is what i was told a couple months ago. They coulda got their act together and figgered out a solution to it by now, I don;t know the status today.
The stuff is amazing, and definitely a walk through CC history. Last time I was in the warehouse, about 2 days afore everyone got canned but Joel and a couple others, it was just depressing. People had been grabbing up all their stuff they had left there over the years - car parts, personal belongings, cars stored there (I know of a 72 or some such FIAT in yeller if ya want one). The Phoenix shirts got out on the black market, which was a better home than the likely dumpster or Wheeler Mission donation.
There is hardly any interest in this stuff from a fan level in that there aren;t many of us still left. I wore CC stuff at IMS 2 days last week and only one tard (Super D) even said anything on day 1. Day 2 I sat next to some PCM hat wearing know it all that axed me how I like the PHX race (I had the shirt on). Had to tell him the race never happened. Duh. That's how bad it is.
The only thing really left is the TF gomerati - a few of us here, and the "Place Fans" at Indy. most of which have nothing more than a mild interest in IndyCar, or maybe seeing Danicles nekkid or "The big one".
Besides a few shirts and a couple banners, I did rescue this pit bike:

A lot of times manufacturers donate "damaged" cars as pace cars. Basically like cars that "fell off a truck" that they cant sell as new but really aren't badly damaged. They fix em and use em as pace cars, blow em up in movies, etc. But yeah no titles, many times no vin tags either, some are even marked un-titleable.

Um, I'm not so sure on that. They put new cars in movies and other high profile projects all the time. I know Ford used to 'give' away the cars for use in movies and TV and I'm sure the other companies do the same. Cheap marketing, comparatively. They write it off as Good Will. As for 'Damaged' cars? Um, I doubt they give them away. They really don't want the liability even if they gave away the car. Its just easier to give away a new one. They'll make more :-)

LoL, Spicoli!! I own a similar model in Black !! Bought it about 2 years ago !! These bikes are made by a company called Phat Cycles in LA. Its called an X Rated, LOL.
A bunch of us Mt. Biking geeks when out and got various cruisers for our Pub Crawling shananigans and I found Phat Cycles and orderd one up. Was suprised to see them at the CC trailer in RA last year.
Great for just toolin round the 'hood on sunny days.
I got the one in Black

I was wondering about that. I remember talking to someone from the pace car program a loooong time ago, who said that when CART was finished with them, they generally went back to the factory. I wonder how many of those manufacturers still have the rights to those cars and don't even know it.
Those cars have long been written off if that's the case.

I just looked at the PDF of the catalog. On Page 55, in “Lot 1370 Safety Cones, Various Sizes, 3 skids”, I can see Runoff, the cone that I created as a mascot for the CCIC photo booth and signup tent, on the left side of the photo, on top of the blue & white cone (he’s the one wearing a checkered-flag scarf). I wish that Runoff could go to someone who appreciates what he was (not likely unless one of you rescues him from the buyer). :(

I am not there yet, but Ed Severson says there are more people at the ChampCar auction than there were at the Milwaukee race last weekend.

Someone should buy Anteater the cone.
They're on lot 156 after 2.5 hours. By the time they get to 1370, it might be tomorrow. :irked:

242. All of the cars are going from 216 to 253, followed by a bunch of scooters. They'll go off in about an hour is my guess.

Nice thought, Brickman, but I already have 2 pet rescued cones (Apex and Pexi the 2006 CCIC mascot cone). My family is going to have me committed if I have a 3rd!
I was just hoping that someone in the know would snag Runoff and give him a good home.

I think... as long as you don't wander the streets giving cones names and dressing them they would understand... I think.;)

Some of the items aren't available in the online auction. There's a 12-minute timeout due to one of these right now.
I wonder who bought the lighted Champ Car sign from the front of the building? It went for $500.

This is pissing me off. I'm approved for $500 but I can't get to the live auction because of proxy something or another. I want that damn Lebaron!

It's the 88 Olds that could be interesting. They only made 49 of the pace car replicas. Not sure if this is one.
