In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army
IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, from the hills, from the sky;
All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.
Fading light, dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright.
From afar, drawing nigh, falls the night.
Thanks and praise, for our days,
'Neath the sun, 'neath the stars, neath the sky;
As we go, this we know, God is nigh.

In Flanders Fields. The single best poem on war and sacrifice.
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
Let it be so.

The poem was written for WWI so I'm bumping this thread today.
I just "happened" to look at my watch at exactly 11 AM.
The 11th hour of the 11th day or the 11th month.

The older I get the more it means to me.
A friend lost in Viet Nam, haven't thought of him for a while.
Roy 'Sweet Pea' Jordan. Thanks. RIP
As I'm reading this thread, I realize I'm listening to a very appropriate song on XM
Forever Owed by Blues Traveler
And when the mighty sea is heaving
And the mountain's gotten big
What anyone believes in
I never gave a fig
But I could never fully handle
The heart that bore the load
Something never spoken
Something forever owed
Till I can bring you home
Till I can bring you home
No, I will never really be free
While you live in my memory
In awe and almost fearful
I'll bet that you don't care
You're most likely thinking
About your brother still back there
Till I can bring him home
Till I can bring you home
I will never really be free
While you live in my memory
I can never have it taken
But I wanted you to know
That forever we're connected, you and me
It doesn't matter where it goes
There are things we simply owe
I can bring you home
I can bring you home
I can bring you home
I can bring you home
I can bring you home
I can bring you home
Till I can bring you home
Till I can bring you home
No, I will never really be free
While you live in my memory
No, I will never really be free
While you
To my dad, grandfather, uncles, cousins and nephew. To anyone who has ever served. Thank you!

And yet:
His message on this Veterans Day, he says, is never to hold animosity toward anybody.
"You only live once. Let's keep trucking. If we don't do that, who's going to do it for us? We have to be happy. Why hate?" he says. "The world is full of hate, and yet they don't know what they want."
Disgusting story, though blindingly heroic on his part. I am even more disgusted by the way our government treats veterans so shabbily. Will we allow the same of the current generation of heroes?

It's not a question of us allowing anything. We haven't been in charge for a very long time.

We're still in charge, we're just more complacent. Less activist. Less protests. Less marches. Less vocal. The people can take back control when they want.
I don't want to ruin this thread so I've edited my post.
Thanks again to all who have served.

Funny how it is more associated with Memorial Day yet it was written about the Great War. "Before we knew enough to number them" (Mr. Wabash in Three Days of the Condor) :(

I'm bumping this up early to be sure you all have a chance to look at the magnificent effort London has made with The Tower Poppies. Today's LA Times has nice photo essay on them. http://www.latimes.com/travel/ There is a nice YouTube video on how they were made. One poppy for each of those who died from the British Commonwealth in The Great War. Number estimates vary but they have made 888,246 poppies. They started spilling out of window in the Tower of London a few months ago. They now cover almost the entire moat and more are being planted up until Remembrance Day, 11/11.

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. The end of the war to end all wars. If only it had been so.
"Thank you" is never enough but I say it to all of you who have served, your relatives, and anyone who has seen fit to put country and the rest of us laggards first in their life. We owe you everything we have.
PS. The Tower Poppies will stay up until the end of November so that more can see and appreciate the display.
Veterans, thank you for your service.

John Fogerty's response to that...
“Fortunate Son” is a song I wrote during the Vietnam War over forty-five years ago. As an American and a songwriter I am proud that the song still has resonance. I do believe that its meaning gets misinterpreted and even usurped by various factions wishing to make their own case. At its core I believe the issue is really about what a great country we have that a song like this can be performed in a setting like Concert For Valor.
Years ago, an ultra conservative administration tried to paint anyone who questioned its policies as “un-American”. That same administration shamefully ignored and mistreated the soldiers returning from Vietnam.
As a man who was drafted and served his country during those times, I have ultimate respect for the men and women who protect us today and demand that they receive the respect that they deserve.”
It's just a song, but John Fogerty is full of ****.
It wasn't Nixon spitting on returning soldiers.

It wasn't Nixon spitting on returning soldiers.you might not want to get into treatment of soldiers in VA hospitals, those exposed to Agent Orange, those with PTSD (though they didn't have a name for it), or those who just got no help re-entering society. That was on Johnson and Nixon.
And while all those who serve deserve respect and support, those who were forced to serve in arguably an immoral war and who had to do immoral things while rich kids got to stay home with their lives unchanged deserve a different appreciation IMO. Born in the USA tells the Vietnam Vet story honestly from the Vets point of view. Every Vietnam Vet I know greatly appreciates that song, mostly for its honesty.
