Yeesh:yuck:

Commuter rail service on Metra's Union Pacific West Line has been halted indefinitely at the height of the afternoon rush hour because a stalled freight train is leaking animal fat onto the tracks, Metra officials said Friday afternoon.

The incident unfolded around 3:30 p.m. between the Elmhurst and Lombard stops, said Metra spokeswoman Judy Pardonnet. The commuter rail line runs from downtown Chicago to Elburn in the western suburbs.

"Trains are not being allowed to move through Villa Park, Elmhurst and Lombard because there's animal fat on the tracks," Pardonnet said.

Train service will not resume through the area until the leak can be halted and it's deemed safe, officials said.

So it is NOT fair to say that the service came to a screeching halt?

At least Metra is taking a break from killing people on a nearly monthly basis.

Unless Metra is different from NJ Transit, the trains don't jump off the tracks to run over people. Usually some light thinking citizen confuses the tracks for a sidewalk.

Two weeks ago a HS senior was walking down the tracks in Manville with his iPod cranked and never heard the screaming horn of the train coming from behind. :shakehead

The folks around here use the trains a little differently. It is relatively common for people to hide alongside the tracks, behind control boxes or other equipment, and as the train approaches at 55 mph to jump out in front of it at the last possible second. Suicide by Trax train, welcome to Salt Lake City.

I suppose it is some natural selection.

Why not go out and give a good long look at the driver, you know, to give him something to remember the day a bit better. :shakehead

(article in the ChiTrib a year or two back, talked about this. They really don't report the suicide-by-train incidents, since they don't want more of them. They interviewed a conductor. His complaint was, "Why do they always look up at you?" Kinda haunting.)

I've known several engineers over the years and they all talk about when, not if, they'll hit someone. If you've seen what a train does to a human it is something that won't easily leave you. Some guys never get over it.

It is also why if you hang around train tracks much you notice some engineers get absolutely manic about anyone anywhere near the track. Do yourself and them a favor, stand well back and let them clearly know that you see them and are up to no mischief.

Suicide by train is a big concern, but so are just stupid people, unknowing kids, and people looking to mess with the track and equipment. We even had a guy nearby put his dead girlfriend on the tracks to try to disguise the fact that he had bashed her head in with a 2x4.
