Utah turkey production shutdown

Utah is a rather large turkey producer, on the order of 5 million birds a year. All the growers are part of a single coop that markets under the brand Norbest. It seems that turkeys eat a largely corn based diet and corn is now running $7.50+ a bushel. At that price they are losing 15% on every turkey so their answer is, total shutdown. They are planning a 3 month shutdown at the moment unless corn goes down and/or turkey goes up.

You would think. It seems that isn't quite that simple although nobody will explain why.

In other words, buy that Thanksgiving bird now and keep it in the freezer.

Unless you've got a small freezer and it's already full. Then you're going to get bent over come mid-Thanksgiving.

The current estimates are that US turkey is going to be cut by up to 15% in order to force a substantial price increase. Looks like the pork producers are doing the same.
a cutback that will send consumer prices dramatically higher.

The shutdown here looks to be an effort to empty the warehouses which will speed the rise in the prices. They are losing money on every bird the produce at the moment so it is worth it to furlough everybody for 3 months. This is the sole large employer in these towns btw.

Oh oh. TravelMom is coming for her annual visit three weeks from tomorrow and she expects the customary full Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings. She says the only old bird she can haul around is herself so I do a complete turkey dinner every summer. Nice and toasty, both in the oven and in the kitchen.

Looks like we should head to the store immediately if not sooner. I'll see if we have room in the freezer for 20 pounder. (Leftovers last till Halloween!)
