The first official image of a Russian-European manned spacecraft has been unveiled.

It is designed to replace the Soyuz vehicle currently in use by Russia and will allow Europe to participate directly in crew transportation.

The reusable ship was conceived to carry four people towards the Moon, rivalling the US Ares/Orion system.

Unlike previous crewed vehicles, it will use thrusters to make a soft landing when it returns to Earth.

I wonder how this relationship will work out.

Do we even have a plan? I saw a news headline the other day that said something about Ex NASA engineers making better rockets than NASA.

I must be getting old because everything seems to be going to hell in a handbasket. You see, I just used a phrase my great grand father used to say!

The funny irony to this is that the cause of the end of the great US Super Power will actually turn out to be MySpace and YouTube.

I can forsee some issues on this one. :eek: They'd had so many issues with reentry, and they choose a lander with thrusters and landing gear?

NASA has a plan, but unfortunately it will take ~3 years from the shuttle shutdown in '10. :(

That's not really the 'plan' I was referring to. Basically, unless you're a NASA nerd and on their 'space cadet' mailing list (which obviously I'm not), the goals and objectives are not being conveyed. The only thing the media is reporting on is that the space shuttle is old.
So is the 'plan' to use this new vehicle to shoot astronauts up to the space station to make 'velco 2', or are there other 'plans'?

I flip flop on the issue (I'd be a great politician). 300 billion to blow up third world countries or 300 billion to take pictures of red rocks. Hmmm.

NASA is like Indycar racing. I used to love it, but they've lost some direction. I want to love it now, but there have been too many bad decisions and I am nowhere near there yet. ;)

If by "plan" you mean the goals of the Constellation program, they are there buried in many links. (also interesting is the risk assessment of all current and proposed space vehicles). It should be here (http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/constellation/news/ESAS_report.html) somewhere.

The program is testing hardware, but you are right - you never hear anything about it or the bigger goals. Not sure whether to blame the press, our short attention span, the economy, bad NASA PR, or Brangelina. ;)

The plan is low Earth orbit, manned missions to the moon circa 2020, and then manned mission to Mars circa 2030.

A recent report in the Orlando Sentinel suggested that NASA is not cooperating with members of President-elect Obama's transition team currently working at Headquarters. This report, largely supported by anonymous sources and hearsay, is simply wrong.

I would like to reiterate what I have stated in a previous email to all NASA Officials: we must make every effort to "lean forward," to answer questions promptly, openly and accurately.

We are fully cooperating with transition team members. Since mid-November, the agency has provided 414 documents and 185 responses to 191 requests. There are six outstanding responses, and the agency will meet the deadline for those queries.

Also, we strongly urge full and free cooperation by companies performing work for NASA. I am appalled by any accusations of intimidation, and encourage a free and open exchange of information with the contractor community.

The transition team's work is too important to become mired in unsupported and anonymous allegations. The President-elect's transition team deserves everyone's complete cooperation.
