View Full Version : The Foyt Futility Watch -- Chicago Style
Ol' AJ must have used his lead mallet trying to beat one of his famous qualifying set-ups into Tex Manning's suspension. Didn't work, though. I'd bet AJ is looking forward to the return of turbos so he can get a cheater pop-off valve from IMS/IRL again.

* No time -- DQ'd for dropping below the white line while qualifying
as ripped from Crash.net
Castroneves' crime had been to duck the #3 Penske Dallara down below the white line on the backstretch, and Barnhart scratched his four-lap average of 215.372mph as a punishment, handing the Brazilian a massive task if he is to overhaul Dixon in the championship. Castroneves can win the title if he wins the race and Dixon finishes outside the top eleven, but the comeback witnessed over the past two races - where he sliced 48 points from the Kiwi's lead - could all have been in vain.

THREE WIDE!!! :shakehead
Just tuned in for the curtain. Pathetic oval racing -- lap after lap of the cars stuck right next to each other because of downforce, drag, and the rev-limiter.
:shakehead
Will endure the next half hour just to wrap up The Foyt Futility Watch for 2008.
Well, the photo finish seemed to preclude a final run down of the field. All Dixon did at the end was hold his line at the bottom of the track and let drag and the rev-limit do its work. Seems as if having Briscoe right behind him gave Castro-Neves just enough of a push to win.
The Princess Permapout was running as high as 4th but got swallowed up and dropped to about 9th when the racing got earnest with about thirty laps to go. AGR pitted her out of sequence under green as usual but that didn't work out since the leaders pitted under yellow a few laps later. Wound up out of the top 10.
Complete Futility Wrap Up when the results come on-line.
Helio beat Dixon according to the video.
No, I didn't watch the whole thing.

Looked like that each time I switched over from Bungledumb on CBS. You could tell the color of each of the sections when the camera angles were right. Another less than half full "sell out"?

I was curious who won the championship. Nothing on the front page of ESPN.com. I had to click into the IRL area of the site to see Dixon was the champion.
The Princess Permapout won't keep this story in her scrapbook.
Milka Duno, one of three women in the 28-car field, led five laps, the first time she has been out front in an IndyCar race. She finished the season with more laps led than Danica Patrick, who led only four laps all season.

Fore was running in fifth or sixth most of the day and spun off of turn four on the last lap.
EJ Viso looked good until his crash - I think he had a tire go down, as he was slow the lap before he crashed.
I was there with my dad and son - I was astonished to see the size of the crowd. I was expecting 15,000 or less, but I think it was closer to 50,000 or so. I think the seating capacity is around 75,000, and I would say the stands were 2/3 full.
The only action in the first 70 laps was Helio, Viso, Fore, and Thomas S moving up the field as Marty Roth was moving backwards. No one could outrun anyone else as all were flat out all the time. Cars would lose two spots or so if they lifted, and pit stops shuffled the field.
It was the first open wheel race I had seen in person in about six years. It was better than I thought it would be, but no comparison to the pre-Forsythe/Kalkoven era of CART/Champcar.
If my dad goes next year, I'll go to watch the race with him, but I would not make the trip to see the race if my dad were not going. Family > Racing

Even in an era of greatly reduced expectations "racing" like that sucks.

Mere seconds. I wore ear-plugs.
I have three children. My capacity to selectively filter out the frequency of whining is quite impressive. I guess it's tunable to match the frequency of crapwagons.

I did not use the word racing.
To me, it was like seeing the movie "Shark Boy and Lava Girl". The movie sucked greatly, but yet it exceeded my expectations.

Citgo presents the Indycar Series on The Streets of Caracas:
http://www.silhouet.com/motorsport/tracks/caracas.jpg
This 9.93km track was used for the 1957 Venezuelan Grand Prix, a round of the World Sportscar Championship, although it had been used for two non-championship rounds before this, and a different variant had been used as early as 1953. The track consisted of a blast up and down the city boulevards, using ramps and overpasses for corners. The major drawback of the track was the stone bollards dotted around the track, which were frequently nudged. They eventually became dislodged and caused several accidents. Coupled with crowd control problems and a lack of organisation, the race was not repeated. The track was also known as the Los Proceres circuit.

That should work out pretty well. Ramps to help the crapwagons get airborne. They have no fans so crowd control won't be an issue this time. Wrap some SAFER barriers around those stone bollards and get the racer-tainment started!

Robin Miller's Mailbag from September 16 (http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/article/robin-millers-mailbag-for-september-16//P5/)
RM: The transponder on Dixon’s car was mounted in the wrong place, so that’s why he flashed on the screen as the winner.
Not that I care one way or another who won that dronefest, (or the Earl championship for that matter), but it seems to me that mounting the transponder in the wrong place in a spec car, presumably to gain an advantage, should draw at least a fine if not a disqualification.

How does something like that even get through tech?

How does something like that even get through tech? The tech guys probably don't GAF either. It's a paycheck, get it over with and go home.

I saw somewhere that the transponders are owned/controlled/installed by the Leeegue. Not the team's fault.

Isn't this being touted as the closest finish ever? How do they know that if the transponders were mounted wrong? Spin, spin, spin.
