I think part of its stupidity is how high it is. if it were lower it woldn't look so stupid.
was it the arrows that had the high wing up on the nose a few years back?

Won't a tall, skinny wing make as much turbulence as a low, wide wing? Is this another "improve the overtaking" improvement? This has been one of the best seasons in a long time, what needs improving?

When they design a complete car with that wing in in mind, it might look a bit better than it does pasted on this car. Maybe... Hopefully... Probably not.

Hey, when the current front wings look like labial folds, why shouldn't the rear wing look like a chubby?

You would think that with the re-intro of slick tyres next season the retards would take a lets see what happens attitude.... But nooooo.... Wholesale changesRus. Idiots.

Why couldn't they just limit the number of mainplanes and flaps on the wing structures? That would have been soooo much easier and cleaned the cars up tenfold.

I read somewhere a while back that F1 had put together some kind of Blue Ribbon Panel (oh boy!) of successful F1 car designers (I've forgotten who) to study the following car turbulence issue, including wind tunnel testing their initial concepts, and this change is supposed to reduce the problem.

I do think that view is ugly but we'll get used to it.

I never got used to the hideous schnorkels of the 70s. Apparently the FIA didn't either, since they did rewrite the regs to eliminate them for the 1977 season (as I recall).

This is why I was hoping the sex scandal would mean the back of Max Mosley. He's spent most of his time as FIA president ruining the configuration of F1 cars. He's such an @$$hole.

Well, those were pioneering days... F1 cars got progressively nicer until Mosley starting bastardizing them. The 2009 rear wing is clearly out-of-proportion to the shape of the rear of the car.

Moveable aero devices?

Drivers will also be able to make two front wing adjustments per lap from the cockpit to maximise their car's performance when slipstreaming and outbraking

Up to twice per lap? What kind of gimmick is this? The raised rear wing is already going to take getting used to, now they have a weird system to adjust the front wing. Is this going to turn in F1's version of p2p? Kimi has used his wing adjustment this lap, Lewis can still adjust his once!

Wonder if the "outbraking" setting on the front wing will include "Full Flaps."

The FIA told us that it will just be a question of getting used to the look of the cars. Yeah right, tell that to Pininfarina or any car stylist. The wings are totally out of proportion to the shape of the cars.

It has all the potential to suck, actually. New wings and tires means that everyone will be starting from scratch rather than evolving. The best racing generally comes after a period of rules stability.

I hope I'm wrong.

Yeah, well, like I said, I'll be thrilled if I'm wrong. But I don't share your optimism.

There are a lot of big changes coming in this year. Some of the teams will adapt well and some will just miss the freaking boat altogether - if you want to slipstream, great, but you've got to be close enough to do it, and if you're too far off the pace then it won't help you.

Add to that that most of the places where you could really make use of slipstreaming are now gone. These regulations might have been useful before they tore up half of Hockenheim, trimmed Silverstone into a series of esses, moved away from the fast circuits of France, dropped Canada......

We'll see.

ilferrari
11-18-08, 07:06 AM
The basic problem is that the following car loses its front downforce following another car in a corner. Why not just shift the balance of the tire grip to the front (for example by narrowing the rear tires)? That would cause the teams to run less front wing and more rear wing to get their balance.

Andrew Longman
11-18-08, 10:06 AM
If I understand it correctly the issue not being able to overtake due to turbulence off the rear wing is being "solved" by making the front wing wider to get it out into cleaner air and the read wing narrower and higher to get the turbulence out of the way of the following rear wing.

I do however like that they've done away with the little aero twisty bit do dads. I hate those.

Yup, all they had to do was put slicks on em for 09 and they would have braked later and cornered harder and it would not have cost more money.....but true to form the azznozzles in charge are gonna fix it.
