Nothing can compete with guys getting whacked in the sack.

Dude, this is the latest hit to the sack for NASCAR this season.
- TV ratings down / flat.
- Large stretches of empty seats at most tracks. (Atlanta 40,000 empties. Texas 20,000. Announcement of closing the backstretch grandstand for next spring's Daytona 500. That's 50,000 seats, people.)
- Rumors of team mergers at the end of season. (DEI/Ganassi. DEI/Petty.)
- Rumors of massive layoffs at the end of the season. We're talking about hundreds of people going jobless, with said layoffs allegedly encompassing the larger, well off teams as well.
The ultimate insult would be if this weekend's race ran long and the coronation of Jimmie Johnson as champ was bumped to ESPN in favor of another episode of Extreme Home Cryfest.

I seriously thought NASCAR was over already this year. Usually it is so in your face you can't get away from it. Refreshing!

Expensive tickets, abandoning Holy Tracks, introducing the Chase and finally the POS of Tomorrow killed a lot of traditional fan interest.
of all the sports in existence, i can't think of any other that will be hit harder by this economic downturn than Nascar.
And that not withstanding, i think the days of the NASCAR ATM machine are over.

iirc it's the coke zero 400 that is closing the 57,000 seat backstrech

Oops. My bad.
But that's still a 33% drop in capacity, if the seating numbers on Wikipedia are accurate.

Just watch and see what happens when Toyota wins the Holy Grail next February.
Wait until GM, Ford and Chrysler pull out.

Wait until GM, Ford and Chrysler pull out. That's why NASCAR bought GrandAm...they'll put all the cab pilots in those things.

I guess there's not much consumer demand for template bodies with stickers and 40 year old push rod tech engines in showroom floors on Monday's any more.:D
Just watch and see what happens when Toyota wins the Holy Grail next February.
I see loyal NASCAR fans littering the track with Sapporo, Ichiban Kirin, and Asaihi cans.

Wadda ya mean pull out? They will be lucky to be in business pretty soon. :(
I didn't realize they were still running.
Just one more race and they're done for the year.
Here are a few comments from the genius who gave us the chase. http://sports.yahoo.com/nascar/news?slug=ap-nascarsfuture&prov=ap&type=lgns

Do they stock that stuff next to the Pabst and Olympia or is it in the "premium section" next to the Budweiser? :D
they should use this economic slow down to drop to 30 races. 24 unique tracks in the regular season, 6 tracks for the chase. drop the chase drives back down to only 10, maybe even 8.
shorten the season, get rid of the weeks off. they can run every weekend that the nfl is off.

The open can leaves a nice looping trail in the air and the can must be full when first tossed to achieve maximum range and afford the best chance of nailing a hated foreign, homo or Yankee driver.

I hate the stupid chase and I hate that Jimmy Johnson and Chad Knauss..have won three years in a row. I still like the racing. From Feb to Sept 10 there is no championship as far as I'm concerned and I don't even check the standings. Lame.

John Then you should go to a race and chuck a beer can at his car...it would be therapeutic

Bruton Smith is that smart, but I really have doubts about the third generation of the France Family Mafia. Yup, all they had to do was shutup and cash the checks. Instead they had a series of visions and f'ed it up....................sound familiar?. Just because you spent your early life swimming around in your daddy's balls does'nt mean you'll have his business skills.

It would funny if Sam doesn't stay in the top 35.
I turned on the tube tonight and they were showing the Ballad of Ricky Bobby on network TV. That is some funny ****.
