Looks like we're about to join the likes of Saudi Arabia, North Korea and China as our Prime Minister Commy Kev leads his charge for compulsory internet censorship through the ISPs...I can understand trying to erradicate child pornography but there has to be a better way of doing it than reducing our (already worst of all 1st world nations) internet speed by up to 87%!

Yeah, I couldn't believe it either
And when they do actually get it up and running, they will still be two steps behing the porn vendors. The nazi porn freak I work with buys and receives all his porn though his phone.

The innerweb is slow in Australia because the electrons have to travel a long way to get there from civilized parts of the Globe. It just takes longer :gomer:
The innerweb is slow in Australia because the electrons have to travel a long way to get there from civilized parts of the Globe. It just takes longer :gomer:Close, but not supported by scientific theory.
The problem is that the web has bottlenecks, but the world-wide compensation solution for getting maximum throughput across the bottlenecks is optimised for the northern hemisphere.
In laymans' terms, when the electrons approach a chokepoint in the north, they spin anti-clockwise, which the internet is optimised to deal with. But when they hit a cutoff in the south, the electrons want to spin clockwise, and the web gets all confused.
This can all be alleviated by holding your network cable and swinging it around in an anti-clockwise circle when you are downloading large things such as image-heavy websites.
Of course, far too often, people that download such files and websites are otherwise occupied, and do not have a free hand available.
I hope this helps.

:gomer: That's good information. So if computers in the southern hemisphere were on turntables that rotated anti-clockwise the electron confusion would be cancelled out! Then those people could use both hands!
Back on topic, this is pretty spooky stuff.
Censors don't ever get "done". They always find more bad stuff to justify their employment.
For the Children (TM).
You guys shoulda kept your guns...

My advice is to support the Electronic Frontiers folks and push back hard and fast. Make sure there is serious political cost for such misguided policy. If your local legislators are made to understand that it will cost them their political future they won't support it.
Nobody is in favor of kiddie porn, or the insects that sell it, but using that as an excuse to exercise broad censorship powers is a much bigger and more serious long term threat IMO.

Amen. We've had some serious victories here recently over spectrum allocation and net neutrality against some very determined and well funded adversaries, so it can be done.
