I sometimes forget how great it was. I sat in thunder valley for that race because we got there late, and we still had trouble finding 10 square feet of grass to sit on.

My first trip to MO and it was the same way. Even the postponed quals a few years later were better attended than the most recent EARL races, IMO.

Thanks again for fixing it, :tony:. :flame: :flame: :flame:  :saywhat:

****ing amateur. You build it when you get there. How many times do I have to tell you guys? Don't drive around with a bomb in your own car. Sheesh.

CART -- racing to the limits 15+mph faster than the IRL and testing what motorsports was all about.

Guge's almost half a lap wild ride after blacking out fortunately put an end to that weekend.

As for AF's drive? His cousin Slowpoke Rodgriguez says: "Andale! Andale! Andale!"

Yep, it sure needed fixing. Four past and future WDC holders in the field and hammer and tong competition from flag to flag all up and down the field. Big crowds, money for the communities and tracks that had money to make improvements... Sigh....

You are missing the point completely. All that success was diminishing the crown jewel of them all, the Indy 500 - or so in the eyes of Lord Sagamore. It was outside of Marion County, Indiana, so it was a threat to the only race that matters.

In fact, these youtube videos are still having their toxic effect on open wheel racing, as evidenced by this thread.

Man, I love sarcasm!

I knew in when I heard ******** had announced his wonderful plan that sooner or later the whole thing would end in tears.

Money and megalomania always leave a trail of broken dreams, such is the case here. :irked:

What I never imagined is how long it would take. Looking at the entire motorsports world, there is no guarantee that a series as strong as CART was in 1993-94 could have survived the current economy. It was already in trouble, but in some ways the demise of Champcar was an early casualty of the recession. If deep pockets weather the IRL through the economy until more prosperous times it will be an injustice.

We had a pretty good run and really showed well against the crapwagons until about 2002, and then it really just went down hill. I think I have been in mourning since then. I missed Portland '02 due to family illness and didn't get to another race until 2005. It was sad to see how much the paddock had changed.

We knew at the time that the mid-90's were a time of fabulous excess which couldn't run forever, but if it weren't for 'the dream', there would still be two or three engines, two or three chassis, and possibly two tires.

The Portland paddock was pretty cool back then because the bollards weren't so far away from the cars and engines, so you could get a good look at the incredible shrinking engine competition from the poor end of the paddock to the rich end.

But, hey! At least Indy is saved. :irked:
