Audi to replace R10 with R15 TDi
By Steven English
Audi R10Audi has confirmed that it will replace its R10 TDi sportscar with a new model, the R15, next season.
The R10 was Audi's first turbo-diesel LMP1 car and followed the R8, which won the Le Mans 24 Hours five times in six years between 2000 and 2005.
The R10 won Le Mans in each of the three years since its introduction in 2006, and it will be superseded by the R15 TDi from 2009.
Audi claims the new car will have a smaller, lighter and more efficient TDi engine than the R10, and confirmed that it will be another open-topped car.
It is scheduled to test for the first time later this year, but will not be publicly launched until shortly before its race debut in Sebring 12 Hours in March.
"It was clear to us that we must develop a new car if we wanted to continue to be successful at Le Mans," said Dr Wolfgang Ullrich, Audi's motorsport boss. "The R15 TDi is the result. The step from R10 to R15 is significantly larger than it was from the R8 to the R10."

I hope that a "smaller and lighter" TDi arrives in a shorter wheelbase and nimbler chassis more suited to the majority of places ALMS runs.

Ahh so Audi now has competition and can't recycle the same car for 10 years. Took long enough!

Don't really care for the looks of it. :(

It's got the same "single-seater in drag" look that the Lola T332 and other F5000 cars took on took on when tarted up for the single-seater Can Am years.
So, we've come from "That's just a crapotype rear-engined stock car!" to "That's just a fendered F-1 car!"? Hmmmm...anyone remember a kid named Roger Penske who put together Dupont-Zerex sponsorship, a F-1 Cooper and a slick envelope for a body and trashed cars 3 times it's size? First guy to break 2:30 at Road America. Quickly banned as I recall. '63? Hell, didn't even have wings or a "sucker" engine:D Don't know where the happy middle ground is for "sports" cars, but I remember the days of mandated 11" winshields, spare tires and room for a suitcase! I think that's when F-1 really took off. Evolution, revolution, devolution...always been with us.
Peugeot's 908 HDi FAP last year.
Don't these guys get the internet?

I think you can be sure that one of them will.

I don't know, but with my vast experience watching animal planet, I think it looks more like this:http://animaltrial.com/Resources/platypusc.jpeg
When else are we ever going to have a chance to nickname a car the Platypus?

It is most definately a platypus car. And like the Platypus, you just know it is going to have a poisonous sting.

Yeah, but those were cool.
The Tyrrell P34 was birthed from open rules and great creativity/innovation.
The Renault was birthed from a set of screwed up regulations which also produced this...

The silver isn't doing it any favors. But on the bright side, it's not like we'll have to watch it race much this year.
Not quite the walrus tusked Williams with fenders... but not beautiful the way endurance racers used to be. Better than some of hideous snouts cobbled onto some things that are supposed to be sports cars.

Because the Pugs and the A-M Lola's will see enough of that at the races.;)

I like the R15. Svelt. Then again, I'm a TDI fanboi. :tony:
That is surely hideous, but I just looked at some '09 F1 cars, so it seems rather beautiful at the moment.
Thanks to the insistent John Thawley, I found out that the official forums shut down..whoops. But I`m sure 10/10ths will get more crowded instead. ;)

Peugeot lowering expectations...
Our objective is to prepare for Le Mans. We won't be out to start from pole or set the fastest race lap at all costs by taking unconsidered risks. We need to progress on the technical, human, and strategic fronts. That said, we won't refuse victory if it comes our way.
