I looked but could not find this. If it has been discussed before please merge the thread.

I resisted Vista ever since it came out and now, 3 weeks after finally buying a computer with Vista, "Microsoft 7" beta is available for download.

Anyone used this? Thoughts on it? Should I try it? Wait? Install it over the Vista? Bear in mind I haven't used the Vista yet so I'm not thrilled about the idea of learning it only to learn M7.

Should I try it?

NO. It is beta. It is probably 2 years at least from official release. Beta versions also have time bombs enclosed, so they quit functioning after a certain date. Beta versions are for the uber micro$oft fanboy geeks. Not travel agent wanna get my email and work done types.

The files are in ISO format which means that you need to burn them to a DVD (http://www.imgburn.com/) before installing. Beta keys will be available later today through the overloaded Windows 7 site (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/default.aspx). Beta installs without a key will last for thirty days. Registered installs expire August 1st, 2009. To create a dual boot, follow this guide (http://lifehacker.com/5126781/how-to-dual-boot-windows-7-with-xp-or-vista).

It is Vista with a lot of the crap removed so that it runs faster and a slightly different user interface so that most people won't be able to tell it is merely vista with a lot of the crap removed. (You can also turn off the a lot of the crap in Vista yourself if you're feeling adventurous.)

I have to say Windows Vista is nowhere near as bad as Windows Me was. If you have the hardware, Vista on a new PC should run flawlessly.

As others said, you don't want to mess with Beta. It's for testing and evaluation. They already released a critical patch for a problem that cut off the ends of some MP3s. No way to get that back unless you had them backed up.

Windows 7 is expected to be out by the end of this year or early next. In testing, it's faster than both Vista and XP.

Windows 7 'Incredibly Stable,' Intel Expert Says

A programmer at the chipmaker says the OS is almost ready for prime time.

By Paul McDougall
InformationWeek
January 15, 2009 12:06 PM

The trial version of the next Windows operating system has won a key endorsement from a software expert at chipmaker Intel (NSDQ: INTC), a company that, despite being one of Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT)'s closest partners, was so leery of Vista that at one point it banned the widely maligned OS from its corporate workstations.

Windows 7 and companion OS Windows Server 2008, at least when it comes to the beta versions, are a whole different ball game from Vista, said Intel software developer Doug Holland, in a company blog post this week.

"I have now been using the Windows Server 2008 R2 beta and Windows 7 beta builds for some time and have found them to be incredibly stable," said Holland, who in previous posts has pointed out that Windows 7 will scale to support a whopping 256 processor cores

Compare these numbers to any other company on the planet and get back to me...

Apple today announced financial results for its fiscal 2009 first quarter ended December 27, 2008. The Company posted record revenue of $10.17 billion and record net quarterly profit of $1.61 billion, or $1.78 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $9.6 billion and net quarterly profit of $1.58 billion, or $1.76 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 34.7 percent, equal to the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 46 percent of the quarter's revenue.
In accordance with the subscription accounting treatment required by GAAP, the Company recognizes revenue and cost of goods sold for iPhone and Apple TV over their economic lives. Adjusting GAAP sales and product costs to eliminate the impact of subscription accounting, the corresponding non-GAAP measures* for the quarter are $11.8 billion of "Adjusted Sales" and $2.3 billion of "Adjusted Net Income."
Apple sold 2,524,000 Macintosh computers during the quarter, representing nine percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold a record 22,727,000 iPods during the quarter, representing three percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Quarterly iPhone units sold were 4,363,000, representing 88 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter.
"Even in these economically challenging times, we are incredibly pleased to report our best quarterly revenue and earnings in Apple history -- surpassing $10 billion in quarterly revenue for the first time ever," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO.
"Our outstanding results generated over $3.6 billion in cash during the quarter," said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple's CFO. "Looking ahead to the second fiscal quarter of 2009, we expect revenue in the range of about $7.6 billion to $8 billion and we expect diluted earnings per share in the range of about $.90 to $1.00."

I don't know about MS, but the Intel cuts are from shutting down older factories because they don't need all that capacity.

I have Vista running on a 1 year old Dell (that folks around here helped me pick out) and any Office application will crash and close every time I close a file. I've gotten used to it but the fix according to Microsoft is to connect to any other printer than the HP one I own until they can come up with a fix.

I've been waiting nine months and the amazing thing is it was some upgrade they installed that created the problem. I used to work fine.

No, maybe three years old and networked to two other PC running older Windows/Office without problems. Their upgrade is what screwed it up.

OK then Barney, connect that pig to a 2yr old HP printer and 5yr old Epson scanner then get back to us when it locks up solid as the digestive tract of an 85yr old man on a bread and water diet....:gomer:

Hi there,

have you guys tried win 7?

I made the mistake of downloading the release, installed in a two year old toshiba, 1 GB RAM.

That thing is worst than vista.
The program crashed the computer installing an upgrade, good thing I made a good back up, going back to XP.

I will refuse to buy the upgrade, it is a very expensive service pack.

Even with the Windows 7 beta release, when you upgrade your OS, you want to do a CLEAN install (that means reformatting your Hard drive and installing the OS).

Disagree entirely. I've been running it on 3 machines- 1 yr old Dell work desktop, Dell Mini 12 and a 2 yr old Toshiba tablet PC- and it's been a vast improvement over Vista as well as XP. We've even thrown it on some 5 year old Dell laptops for giggles and it was tolerable. The only real issues I've hit involve the install process for some of the more esoteric software we're still running (and even those run fine- it's just the installer that freaks out).

As Mike says, always do a clean install and your life will be happier.

I did a clean install, I am blaming the graphics card.

Run the performance rating and got a 1.

For some reason, I have not been able to install an update, the computer just hangs for hours. It is an old laptop I use to try new software and to experiment.

I am waiting for the final release, am planing to install win 7 on a newer compaq laptop with 2 gig memory running vista pretty decent, with no problems at all for over a year (and counting).

May try a clean install on a separate partition.

Got on the train early and pre-ordered, 45.00 for the upgrade.

But how does all of this affect my porn? That's what I need to know.

I believe you will have to register your porn with Microsoft to make sure you haven't downloaded it illegally. Then whenever you run Windows Update you will have to also download the Windows Porn Verification Tool to make sure you have only Microsoft Verified porn on your computer. I understand if you view unverified porn you will get the dreaded BSOD. Don't worry though, the information on the BSOD will tell you exactly how to fix the problem.

My laptop I got last summer runs Vista fine. I have heard that it slows down machines so i wonder if the dual core and 4gb of RAM just power through some of the problems. I do feel cheated with being stuck with Vista with no discount upgrade to 7.

I have heard that it slows down machines so i wonder if the dual core and 4gb of RAM just power through some of the problems. .

The problem is that a dual core should run more than just the operating system. If all you're doing is checking email and using Office, a $500 netbook should be good enough.
