don't you worry about that whole Hg contamination thing, it comes from the earth so it's good for you!

MONDAY, Jan. 26 (HealthDay News) -- Almost half of tested samples of commercial high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) contained mercury, which was also found in nearly a third of 55 popular brand-name food and beverage products where HFCS is the first- or second-highest labeled ingredient, according to two new U.S. studies.

HFCS has replaced sugar as the sweetener in many beverages and foods such as breads, cereals, breakfast bars, lunch meats, yogurts, soups and condiments. On average, Americans consume about 12 teaspoons per day of HFCS, but teens and other high consumers can take in 80 percent more HFCS than average.

"Mercury is toxic in all its forms. Given how much high-fructose corn syrup is consumed by children, it could be a significant additional source of mercury never before considered. We are calling for immediate changes by industry and the [U.S. Food and Drug Administration] to help stop this avoidable mercury contamination of the food supply," said the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy's Dr. David Wallinga, a co-author of both studies.

In the first study, researchers found detectable levels of mercury in nine of 20 samples of commercial HFCS. The study was published in current issue of Environmental Health.

In the second study, the agriculture group found that nearly one in three of 55 brand-name foods contained mercury. The chemical was most common in HFCS-containing dairy products, dressings and condiments.

The use of mercury-contaminated caustic soda in the production of HFCS is common. The contamination occurs when mercury cells are used to produce caustic soda.

"The bad news is that nobody knows whether or not their soda or snack food contains HFCS made from ingredients like caustic soda contaminated with mercury. The good news is that mercury-free HFCS ingredients exist. Food companies just need a good push to only use those ingredients," Wallinga said.

So washing down a tuna sandwich with fruit punch is an especially bad idea? :gomer:

In the past, fructose was considered beneficial to diabetics because it is absorbed only 40 percent as quickly as glucose and causes only a modest rise in blood sugar.5 However, research on other hormonal factors suggests that fructose actually promotes disease more readily than glucose. Glucose is metabolized in every cell in the body but all fructose must be metabolized in the liver.6 The livers of test animals fed large amounts of fructose develop fatty deposits and cirrhosis, similar to problems that develop in the livers of alcoholics.

But hey, like mercury, its fine in moderation

This is waaaay past insane. There are eight chlor-alkali plants in the US. The plants average 56 cells and each cell contains 8000 lbs of mercury. Strangely enough, caustic soda cooked over 8000 lbs of mercury contains trace amounts of mercury:irked: Gee YA THINK????

Another shocking:rolleyes: bit of news is that if you use mercury contaminated caustic soda to make HFCS you will get mercury contaminated HFCS. Who would have thought that:flame:

The only bit of good news about this is that there is a second, membrane based method to make HFCS that is less expensive and mercury free. So not every Coke you have had for the past decade or two has contained a bonus mercury chaser, just a random number based on where you live and the vagaries of the HFCS distribution chain.

And of course the FDA does not test things like Coke for Hg because, well why would they:irked::shakehead

I'm more annoyed by the commercial and how the girl keeps the popsicle perfectly frozen in the crappy cooler. If that technology exists, I need it for beer.

I had a tuna sandwich for lunch yesterday, but washed it down with a Sprecher Abbey Triple. :D
